Dress of the day 126 Halloween In Life And On Zoom: How to make hats, buy bargains and store

The white ghost item in my left hand is not a butterfly catcher nor a spider catcher but a trick or treat bag held out at a distance, for Covid-19.

In the picture of me in the doorway you can see: St George of England cross on Wellington boots; black full length lace slip by Marks & Spencer; From Waitrose supermarket in the UK: Trick or treat, black bucket bag showing pumpkin, orange trick or treat bucket bag with black cat face design; gold horn head-dress, small red trident,  plastic skeleton hand (arm outside picture); synthetic orange pumpkin spectacles.

You can make a ghost from an old net curtain on a string. Add two of your smallest black buttons for eyes. No buttons? Look inside all your shirts, blouses, jackets, coats. Use Tippex or other white paint on the buttons for a glint in the eye, or the edge of the eyeball.

Any witch's hat in black will do for Halloween. The preferred colour used to be pumpkin orange but now purple seems to be another colour. I predict lime green will be added in a later season.

You can easily draw on a white pattern such as a spiders web. Or eyes. Or a black net for a veil. Or a white net for a white veil.

You can add a conical top made from stiff card, on any hat with a brim. How to make a cone? Draw and cut out a circle from fabric or card. Cut out an almost triangular slice with two lines A shape from the central point. Either overlap the gap or join neatly. Sew up or use stick tape. Attach to brim.

Notice the drape behind me used as a background on Zoom. It is a thin 'plastic' tablecloth, attached by pushing it underneath the top row of books on the bookcase behind my office chair.

The handiest item was a tote bag with a skull theme for storing my Halloween items. Despite the clutter in my hoarder's home, and the fact I had not made a note of where the Halloween kit was kept, I found everything from the previous year's Halloween fast.
