Packing for all weathers - sun, snow, sea, accessory outfit 316

Image
Packing For Cold - in hot countries  I went to France in January. The south of France. I thought it would be hot. It was not. Countries which have four seasons can be hot in summer but cold in winter. I was very glad I had packed a long pair of socks. I had to wear pyjama bottoms, night wear, as leggings. Like a Punjabi outfit. By chance I had a pair of gloves in my jacket pocket. I left London in the cold with a hooded jacket I was very glad to have it. And the gloves. On another occasion, in a hot climate, I went on a boat trip. Out at sea, there was a chill breeze. At night, when the sun went down, it was really cold. Singapore and Thailand In the hottest countries, at a restaurant, you might be sitting outisde in the heat. But if you sit indoors, there is chilly air conditioning Especially if your table is under it.  I always take a long scarf. It can be used to cover you up in a temple or conservative gathering.  Asian Temples Although some temples do not allow sleeveless and back

Scarf tying tips - front, back and knot, or clipped, outfit 315

Image
I wear a lot of scarves. What to do? I have scarf brooches but I loose them. The moral is, a place for everything, and everythign in its place. Maybe keep them in the drawer with the scarves. I watched a scarf tying video. It goes very fast. A good idea  is to pick a scarf and then watch the video. Practice on that scarf.  One easy tip is threading a scarf through the top button hole. This requires a very slender scarf. Thin silk.  You also need a neatly sewn buttonhole which won't catch the threads of your precious scarf. A good alternative to a brooch with a big pin which could tear a delicate scarf.  Practise the neat knot on a day when you are not going anywhere, perhaps with a friend. Like tying a school tie, once you have learned it, if you do it every day, it soon becomes easy.  Negatives\ - warning on long scarves Another warning, caveat. I do not like scarves circling around the front of the neck and then hanging back which could catch in machinery, or clothes. At worst, s

Happy Birthday Hat 314 - and alternative happy headgear

Image
To ensure that the restaurant knows it is your birthday, wear this hat. A reusable hat. It doesn't say how old you are. It doesn't specify girl or boy. So you can use it for different members of the family. A hat made of fabric should last longer than a paper hat. The multi colours enable you to match it to any colour of outfit. What a handy hat. Alternative If you are really short of packing space, or the time and money to get this, a hairband, and a badge saying it's my birthday can fit in a pocket. This was my flower head decoration which can also be worn as a necklet. I like it framing my face. It is amusing on Zoom when you are seated and people can see only your upper half.  You could even cut it to make a belt, a travel accessory with two uses. Or buy a second one and cut it, to make a belt for a matching midriff.  Promotional photo from https://www.amazon.co.uk/Birthday-Headwear-Costumes-Outfits-Accessory Please share links to your favourite posts.

St Patrick's Day Next Year - What To Buy, Shamrock hats, post 313

Image
Vgoodal Shamrock hat from Amazon or their online store  Add as a prop a glass of green beer. I found hthese on Amazon. The trick is to order them far enough in advance to receive them in time.  I like the sayings,  The luck of the Irish, and  It's a great day to be Irish, and  Everybody's Irish for a day. Save money and help recycling with Rent a dress - from UK's HURR (Ghost and others) or Selfridges (Self Portrait and others) Post 312

Image
I keep buying and running out of storage space. I have boxes of clothes from living overseas in storage. They might go mouldy.  Here's a solution. Rent a dress. I would not do it regularly. But I can see occasions when it would come in handy. For example, on holiday, when you travel on a budget airline and don't have suitcase space. Some of what you save on the airfare could be spent on hiring a dress. Weddings Whether you are a bride or a guest, you might want a special dress for the photos and videos. But you might not have another occasion to wear it. Or you might fancy a dress which is beyond your budget. Impeccable in Hatch End, London Impeccable in Hatch End. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright. Men's dress hire has always been the thing for weddings and my family has used Impeccable which has a branch in Hatch End. The wedding season in the UK is summer. At the end of the season they sell off some of the items.  But here are lots of places which offer dresses, hats,

Polish Flag colours, red and white, dress of the day 311

Image
ANGELA  Lansbury earing the colours of the Polish flag, white above red.   In Singapore I wore a red top and white skirt for Singapore's national day. The colours are in the opposite positions to Poland's flag. In Singapore the red, lucky to Chinese cultures, is at the top. The additional moon n is a Muslim symbol because Singapore was oriinally part of Malaya until the two separated into Malaysia and Singapore. In the UK for a speech on Poland I wore a wwhite blouse with a red skirt. No shortage of food in red and white if you ever want a red and white themed meeting. Wines are red and white too. FlAG OF IiNDONESIA The flag of Indonesia is like Singapore's with the red above and the white below.\ Your red and white outfits can be worn for Polish occasionas, Singapore national Day in August, Indonesian occasionas, Christmas, and Valentine's Day. St Patrick's Day dress in green, dress of the day 310

Image
My St Patrick's day outfit is green with an orange scarf.  St Patrick's Day is celebrated all over the world, in the streets and in places whereh ou mingle, meet, drink and eat. Some pubs give away green hats. Other charge for the hats. Or give them in exchange for purhcases of drinks or food.  St Patrick's day is celebrated by Parades. In the USA they turn canalas or waterways green. They serve green beer, coloured with food colouring, no change to the taste. St Patric is the patron saint of Ireland. He supposedly rid the country of snakes. But investiagatrs have shown that there were no snakes recorded before he arrived. As is often said, why let the truth get in the way of a good story. Angela  Angela Lansbury in her birthday outfit. Photo by Trevor Sharot. Skirt Black Jacket green with embroidery. Brand ROSEs . Spelled like that with capitals for ROSE then a small s. On my computer screen it looks blue. I dont mind. Blue suits me and matches my eyes. Blouse wwhite The blouse is fancy, with long floppy v shape collar ends. They hang to one side. So I fastned them with a safety pin invivibl, underneath. Boots, black and red with petal tops. You can still buy these ankle boots in three colours, black, or wine with black petals, which I am wearing here. or yellow. They are very cofortable. Do an image search. They zip up the back.  I added a red pandant for a touch of bright colour. I need to wear something red to lift my mood. The piece de resistance is the head band with tubline or hanging daisies. Close up its rather cheap, but at a distance and at night it looks fantastic against my blonde hair and Im sure would look great on other hair colours too.

Is fur from dead animals cruel or semsible? Real fur from roadkill! Post 308

Image
I was looking at the hats worn by Chassids, a minority sect of Jews. They were their large hats on the Sabbath and VIPs wear them. The hats are from northenr cold countries from the era when it snowed in winter and you had no central heating. It was the style worn by the non Jewish nobility.  I went online and discovered that the hats are made from fox fur. We have a fox in our gardne in London, in fact foxes are all over London, nowadays, now that fox hunting is either banned or unpopular. I wondered how long a fox lives. only four to five years. That means that during your lifetime of 80 years, several generations of pairs of foxes have lived in your garden or neighbourhood.  On Quora there is a great debate on this. I doubt whether destorying fur and ivory benefits anybody. It simply makes the value, the price, or rare items increase, so those who kill to get tusks and fur to sell have more incentive. I am in favour of wearing fake fur if it is a warm substitute.  But what about usi

Birthday badges, a Headband from Morrisons, birthday tee shirts and full size cut outs of yourself Post 307

Image
I have a badge from a birthday card which I save for all family birthdays. I had saved the badg from a birthday card. I bring the badge out every year.  Morrisons supermarket in London has a headband with It's's my birthday. The gold tone which I saw in Morrisons in Hatch End cost 3.50 sterling pounds. The coloured version which I saw on their online website cost slightly less, at 3 pounds.. I fancy one of each.  You can buy personalised aprons (plus engraved drinking glasses, key rings, bottle openeers and slate goods and coasters with your photo, from  All Things Personalised) Another conpaniy created flower cards, bunches of flowers in a vase with a large card as a frame. Parties. I have a happy birthday banner of trinagular lettes spelling happy birthday. look in and ask in a party shop. Ballloons with numbers, of happy birthday or happy aniversary, with or wihtout nubmers, are a traditional favourite. For parties, you can get  lifesize cardboard cutouts of famous people s

Post 306 Warm Winter Clothes, Framed By the Doorway of Grimsdyke Hotel

Image
Angela Lansbury at the entrance door of Grisdyke Hotel, London, England. Photo by Trevor Sharot. Skirt Vintage Green suit skirt, label Ann Balon, of the UK. Warm in winter, in March in London where it is cold outdoors. The slit in the skirt is filled by a DIY black insert.  Boots Black and red leather with flower petal design. Low. Flat heel. Ankle length. Blouse White. Three jooly red embroidered lozenges on the front. I wore it because the red would cheer me up. Looking at the photo, I reckon the blouse might have looked better tucked in. But y husband was cold outdoors and impatient to leave. The main purpose of our visit was to check out the restaurant, not to take photos, which was my secondary purpose. Black coat Marks and Spencer's Black Bag Leather. Zip top and a zip inside pocket. Two arched handles.  White Cap and scarf Even in the daytime, I carry a white hat so I can be seen at night or on a dark road. The safety saying goes, wear white at night. The white cap is sewn

Reversible rings, opals or coloured stones, some set in silver Post 305

Image
I was first sent a video advertisment from Jewelrybyserendipity. I liked the idea of a reversible ring. thier website even showed you how to work out your ring size by winding a strip of peper around your finger, mraking the overlap point, then measuring it. They have a chart of ring sized. I then looked online I wondered about other colours. Would the ring break.  What about the price. And I did not want a ring which would irritate or turn my finger green, or tarnish, or have plating which flaked off leaving it shabby and catching on clothes. I found other sites selling reverysble rings on etsy and esewhere. I also found reversible bracelets and necklaces. When To Buy A Gift Mother's Day has gone in the UK and so has Valentine's day. But you may have a birthday of wedding anniversary or holiday coming up.  Gold, Silver, Plated, Or Costume Jewellery? Frankly, I would go for sterling silver or gold.  Smarter. More durable. Have ongoing value. Rings Or Other Things? I tend to lo

Photos, Edited, Cropped, AI, natural, or what? Post 304

Image
You can enhance your travel photos by cropping. Remove litter. Objects obstructing your view.  A lot of fuss was made over the edited photos of the Princess of Wales, Kate (nee Middleton). Was the PR company to blame for sending them out. Surely PR is about prucing the best possible pictures. If they are misleading, then to clarity words could, and should be added. From now on I shall try to remember to add to my photos the words, natural, unedited photo, cropped photo, or cropped and edited.   The solution is simple. Just like the newspapers have to put advertisement, advertorial or editorial or disclaimers on articles, photos should be accompanies by the words, natural photo, edited photo, or AI photo. Dates are also useful. Dating sites sometimes specify recent photo taken in the last year or the last 3 months. If I employ a photographer to photograph a wedding I epect him to crop out litter or passers by in the distance.  I have also had group photos where one person had their eyes

Fixing a stone back on an ear-ring. Post 303.

Image
Here are my restored ear-rings.  For years I have had jewellery sitting around with missing stones. Now is the time to get them all restored. I started with an easy one. I had the stone. the stone was large so easy to handle and stick. My husband stuck it down with Loctite glue.  He held it in place with Sellotape. That is a UK brand of clear sticky tape.  I was afraid. I asked him,  'When we pull off the sticky tape, wo't the stone come off with it?' He replied, 'No.' He told me to leave the glue 24 hours to dry out and set. This is how the broken ear-ring started, ear ring with empty bowl for the stuck on gemstone. Photos by Angela Lansbury.
