If you need a birthday hat in a hurry, grab some tissue paper, fold concertina wsie. Cut a v shape at the top through all the layers. Write happy birthday using a black felt tip pen  if you have more time and you are handy with a needle, or not handy with a needle, consider a glove birthday hat. Two gloves gives you up to ten candles. You can sew the complete gloves, or just the fingers. You could add the fingers on top. \ Or cut holes in the hat and pull the fingers through from underneath. If necessary, then cut the palm of the glove away from the fingers.  Depending on the size of the hat and the glove fingers, you might leave the fingers in a line. However, we return with items which are stained by wading through water, falling off stepping stones and enduring splashes. Add to this eating food on the go, eating out at cafes without napkins, drinking coffee to keep awake, or from a tip-up dispenser, eating and drinking in a hurry as the group moves. Then there's the stains from falling over in the mud, sitting on grass or rocks. And those stains which magically appear, with nothing you can blame on yourself, others, or circumstances.
