Chinese New Year - time to wear red, but how does this affect travellers, shoppers, organizers, members and all? Post 289

Image
Time to get out Chinese clothes for Chinese New Year.  The traditional dress for ladies is the cheongsam. If you don't have one, just wear red. The auspicious colour in the Orient is red. Everywhere you will see decorations which make god backgrounds for a photo of you in your pretty clothes. You can also be photographed alongside lion dancers who perform in public places and special events. Angela with the Chinese God of Wealth. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Chinese New Year 2024 starts on February 10th. But it continues. I used to think that this would not affect those who are not Chinese but it does in many ways. You need to think ahead. Busy Buses, Flights, And Airports Flights 1 Flights will be busy taking people overseas or within a coutnry to visit families. This means, seats at popular times and days could be unavailable, fully booked, double booked.  Less choice of seating.  Airport Longer queues at airports to check-in. Longer queues for luggage. Chinese New Year Red Outfit, dress of the day number 579

Image
Angela in red Chinese New Year outfit, dress of the day number 579. Photo selfie by Angela. Edited by Angela on Samsung phone using filter posterize. the filter added colour to the background.  I wanted  to wear red for Chinese New Year. Chinese New Year is so called in China, Singapore and other countries or cities with large Chinese populations. It is also known as Spring Festival, and Lunar New Year. Red is the auspicious or lucky colour. Everything is red. Red lanterns. Red packets with gifts for children and unmarried adults. I selected a red and white broderie anglaise dress. This was bright red, with a slight contrast of white, broderie anglaise, suitable for smart casual day wear. However, it was not smart enough for the evening.  To make it more festive for the evening, I added a lacey, red sequined bolero. Then a red scarf with small silver dots. My first selfie taken with my phone captured only from my bust upwards. Angela wearing red outfit, dress of the day 5...

Angela with a seasonal toy rabbit, dress 576 - rabbit bracelets and co-ordinating

Image
Angela with a soft toy rabbit for Chinese New Year. Selfie by Angela Lansbury. When Chinese New Year meetings were held online on Zoom for Toastmasters International speakers' clubs, I thought I should keep a prop handy. My first thought was a mask. That is an item of clothing or accessories. Everyone can relate to wearing that.  Then I thought, it was the year of the rabbit. How about a drawing of a rabbit, or download a picture of a rabbit and print it off.  Did I have a rabbit toy or puppet? I have lots of soft toys and puppets. I hunted around and, sure enough, I had a rabbit. Inface I had thre. I selected one which was just the right size. No too small to see. Just right. Rabbits I had a soft toy rabbit which I kept on my desk in case I had an opportunity to speak about it during Chinese New Year. On Saturday 28th January I was in a Zoom meeting of a Toastmasters Group for training speakers, Braddell Heights 2. I had been invited to be the Language Evaluator. The t...

338 Orange shorts and white top. CNY colours. Casual. Which Valentine, Valentino?

Image
Angela in orange. Photo by Trevor Sharot. Seasonal Orange Colour Chinese New Year colours are orange. Oranges. After taking the photo, I thought, I could have added seasonal and colour co-ordinated oranges. But that was not necessary as I already had my watering can which was orange. The Orange Shorts I love the bright colour of the orange shorts. The key piece of the outfit is the shorts.  The pattern is great.  Brand Emilio Valentino Brand Emilio Valentino. Not just valentino. Emilio Valentino. They were founded in the USA in the 1990s. 1n 1999, to be exact. Three nines, like the old UK all-purpose emergency phone number.  The similarly named Valentino group started in Italy in the 1960s.  Valentine - Valentino Converting the names into English, you get Emil and Valentine. With Valentine's day coming up, you can remember the name and how it translates from English to Italian. Do you recall the silent movie star Rudolf Valentino? I added the white top, then m...

My Dream Sewing Machine's Features: An Automatic needle threader and a one step buttonhole. Or the lightest, cheapest sewing machine.

Image
It's the singer 3232. Automatic needle threader and one step buttonhole.  I saw a similar one by Brother in Popular book store. The price was reduced for Chinese New Year. My husband said I could have it for my birthday in March. Two things were wrong with this idea. Firstly, by March the price had gone back up to double the special Chinese New Year offer. Secondly, my husband had gone off the idea of buying me another sewing machine! I should have just ordered it myself. Then I found this small, cheap machine by Singer. Small machine, but no buttonholer and no self threading. Smallest lightest machine with no cord, runs on batteries. Read the reviews on Amazon. It is not the lightest if you are holding it up to repair the top of a curtain. But smaller if you are travelling to a sewing class or group. You need to order the 6 volt power device, because batteries apparently last only about half an hour.   If you don't mind a four step buttonhole, you can buy a machine...

Dress of the Day 191 Oranges and blue stripes

Image
Same picture without the starburst.  Same picture with blue Hotter shoes The blue stripe top is another top worn inside out. You may have seen the top in my posts before showing it the right way around with the leaf effect. The top was from Primark in Harrow, London, UK. Under the blue top is an orange short sleeve vest. I thought, that orange doesn't go with the blue. But then I added the orange hat. I went to look for an orange scarf and found one with brown and blue. Almost never worn, because of the unusual combination of colours. Now I had a use for it. Let me just tell you about the source of the top which started this outfit. Primark. Primark Primark is one of my favourite bargain stores in London, England, UK. 9I have to mention England, UK , because to Americans in north America the nearest London is Canada. When I left the USA, where I had been living for thee years, I told Americans I was going to London, and I received letters months later address to me, simply i...
