Upcycling Small Sequinned Tops I keep seeing lovely sequinned tops which are too small for me. I don't need a top which is too small. But I do need an evening bag. I envisage turning one of the sequinned tops into a small, smart evening bag to take on holiday.  Are Small Bags Practical? Is a small bag useful? During the day, or out in the city in the evening, I like a big bag to carry home possible purchases. However, you might want a small bag, if you are just popping down to the hotel's restaurant for a quick coffee, or cocktail, or happy hour in an all day club lounge. The Red Skirt The red sequined skirt was from Peacock. Many suppliers have sequin skirts, at different lengths, colours, and prices. Inspiring Sequin Embellishment I saw a silver sequin skirt in Marks & Spencer in the sale. I don't think silver flatters me, although I tend to wear silver jewellery which is less expensive to buy. I loved the sequin roses and wanted to do the same on other garments. The roses were made up of different sizes of sequin. Buying sequins I went online and looked for sequins.  You could buy huge quantities of one size of sequin at a high price. Fine, if you intended to use a lot, for a long time. But beyond my budget. However, I bought a small packet of mixed sequins. Postage Costs - Extra or Free The postage is the killer. The postage can cost ore than the product. So I looked for free postage. Often the free postage was on larger quantities or higher priced products. Time Sewing Sequins I then decided that the time taken to create the pattern of the rose, and sew each sequin on, was too time consuming.     Sweater embroidered with mock pearls matches my hat pinned with mock pearl brooches.  I had never worn this pale grey sweater  I thought pale grey was a boring colour and always opted for something brighter such as royal blue or bight red. However, as I re-folded warm winter tops to fit them into my crammed dresser unit shelves, this fell out. Was the universe sending me a message?  I thought, I don't remember ever wearing it.  I must wear it once. Just for a change.  Snow is falling outside in London. Now is its hour. I looked  at the decoration. Sequins! I had been searching for sequins to wear at New Year. This thick sweater would not match my red solid sequin evening skirt. Besides, he did not like it. He said it was gaudy. I felt it. I am afraid that sequin outfits will feel uncomfortable. But this one felt soft. He marched out. I could have stayed, but we were on a one hour parking meter and had already spent time having a coffee.   I phoned Peacocks in Borehamwood the next day and the skirt was still available in several sizes. Even better, the price was reduced to six pounds! But they would not put aside a sale price item. Nor post it.  Ordering Online - More Expensive So I looked online. Ordering online I had to pay £15. Google kept finding me South Africa, hotels called South Lodge, loding in the south of the USA.  I did find one South Lodge top on etsy. The top which was cream colour was described as vintage by the seller. But it had no sequins nor embroidery.  I was not tempted to buy. Nor even show you, my dear reader, the picture.   See outfit 484. Blue Indigo Moon Top The blue top is one of several vintage outfits I bought on ebay, mostly odd jackets or tops. I spent a week bidding on several and waited to see which, if any, I won at reasonable prices. 3 XL so fewer bidding for it. The embroidery colours are pale pink, pale blue, white and black. The thick matt almost felt like fabric is mostly cotton,  with some polyester. The trim different.  Plus beads and sequins.  Iron on warm, it says. Then, don't iron. Reading carefully, I see it says don't iron on decoration. You would have to be very careful. Or place fabric over the decoration so your oscillating hand movements on the iron don't go fruther than intended. This time I am wearing the long top with a black skirt and white blouse. Not a lot to lose at that price. Buyer's Doubts  I hesitated because it was faded in a line under the bust. Old and shabby. Rescue and Renovation  I still thought I could do something with it. Either use the lower half as a skirt. Or use it as a pattern. Or wear it with the top hidden under a jacket. Or sew a ribbon horizontally across the front, or two parallel ribbons. Or dye it so that the faded part took on a vibrant shade. Red Accessories I put it on and looked for red accessories to enhance the new look. My frequently worn red sandals were too bright a red.. It looks like a cross between a straw hat and a Panama hat and a trilby. The label inside says 100% polyester. The hat is lined with white fabric so there is not scratching of your skulls from spiky bits of real or imitation straw. I could sew onto the inside band a piece of stretchy thin flat, hat elastic.  (I did that recently on my Sandeman hat.) DIY hats to decorate I later looked online to see what I could find and make in a similar style. I could buy a white hat from China. But last time I bought a pink cowgirl hat, it arrived out of shape from the packaging being bashed.  Silk and Smart Hats I found another stand selling even smarter hats in silk, other styles, such as one amusing beret.   The bright lights were a photo opportunity and created a halo effect on my blonde hair. Lights are excellent if you are wearing sequins. I went out for the evening wearing a sequinned scarf. 

 I like the pockets. Not many tops have pockets. Photo by Trevor Sharot. I matched up the red effect of the top with a red cotton petticoat, red shoes and a red carry on bag. The top has no label. I found it discarded, rescued it, washed it. The colours are red, pink, green, slate blue, yellow. It is embellished with tiny round rhinestones. One of the males in my family asked, "Are they sequins?" I replied, "No. Sequins are reflective, shiny coloured discs which have holes in the middle, so you can sew them on." i looked them up. They can be made of metal or plastic. Sequin effect discs without holes which can be stuck on have a different name. Spangles. For rhinestones see later post.
