Image
White beret from France. Used to promote white wines of France at the London Wine Fair. Also as gifts to visitors who completed a challenge. The white berets were for white wines. The red berets were for red wines. Amazon has crochet red berets from about 7 pounds. Many sites have berets costing twenty pounds or more. Ebay has red berets at just over  three pounds with just over three pounds for shipping or six pounds plus with free shipping. White berets were offered at about four pounds from Shein and five pounds from others with reductions when buying two or more hats. Several sellers on ebay offered a large number of colours. Alpe D'huez French ski resort Jacket post 607

Image
A Sharot wearing a black Alpe d'Huez jacket. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright.  The jacket has an integral hood. The hood keeps the neck warm. It cannot get detached, left behind, lost. The name of the ski resort is embroidered in orange. Above are mountain peaks outlined in white. Also in white is the height of the mountains, 3330 metres. Why do I need to know the height? Is that very high? My search question produced an AI answer which was a copy of an opening paragrph froom Wikipedia - 'altitude, as Alpe d'Huez's  Pic Blanc  summit at this height makes it one of the highest points in France and a reliable source of snow for its long ski season.  For context, this altitude is higher than the summit of the  Eiffel Tower  (about 300 meters) and most of the highest peaks in the British Isles, such as  Ben Nevis  (1,345 meters).' To match the orange colour of the embroidered name, also in orange are the zip with long fabric pulls, and the ...

Yellow, Etam top, black skirt, multicolor Outrageous jacket, summer outfit 573

Image
Yellow adds a pop of colour to a summer outfit. Especially if you have bonde, white or streaky hair. The Light Yellow Colour Top I love the light, bright colour. It really would go well with green Small Size Top - Solutions The yellow top seemed too small. Tight on the bust and body. Tight on the upper arms. However, I put it on. I have managed to wear it all day. I wondered whether wearing it five minutes every day would gradually stretch it.  Cotton-Elastane Fabric The fabric is 96% cotton but only 4% elastane. Amazing that such a small amount of elastane makes such a lot of stretch.  What else? wash at 40 degrees. Iron on setting one, which is cool. No bleach, no dry cleaning, no tumble drying. I don't even need to decipher which symbol is which, They are all crossed out. Casual Summer Style When I bought it, the sleeves were folded up to make a wide cuff. I folded the cuffs down to make  slightly longer sleeves. I thought that would look better, less casual. Th...

Packing for all weathers - sun, snow, sea, accessory outfit 316

Packing For Cold - in hot countries  I went to France in January. The south of France. I thought it would be hot. It was not. Countries which have four seasons can be hot in summer but cold in winter. I was very glad I had packed a long pair of socks. I had to wear pyjama bottoms, night wear, as leggings. Like a Punjabi outfit. By chance I had a pair of gloves in my jacket pocket. I left London in the cold with a hooded jacket I was very glad to have it. And the gloves. On another occasion, in a hot climate, I went on a boat trip. Out at sea, there was a chill breeze. At night, when the sun went down, it was really cold. Singapore and Thailand In the hottest countries, at a restaurant, you might be sitting outisde in the heat. But if you sit indoors, there is chilly air conditioning Especially if your table is under it.  I always take a long scarf. It can be used to cover you up in a temple or conservative gathering.  Asian Temples Although some temples do not allow sleev...

Post 273 Travel Outfit for chilly France - how to pack for all seasons and events

Image
Socks and Sandals  In France I wore two pairs of socks, The long socks were an accident. I did not expect to wear them except rolled down. i just grabbed them at the last moment because I wanted a pair of socks.  They were a blessing in two ways.  1 They were long and an extra layer of warmth. I could wear them under or over a pair of short socks.  2 I thought they looked odd. However, a lady at the table behind me, with her back to me, turned and said to me, "I like your colourful socks!"  We quickly became friends and exchanged phone numbers. I wore adjustable sandals to fit over the double socks. I had no tights. Then I discovered, leftover from my trip to Thailand, very thin rayon trousers. I wore them in lieu of tights. Leg covering. Another layer of warmth.  Skirt and Slip I wore a long red skirt. Underneath I wore a long black half slip. How could I cover my legs? I had brought no tights. I had to cover my legs. I found  my black swimshorts,...

Looking at lovely lace. Post 568, for clothes, tablecloths, ear-rings, shawls, dresses, and in museums,

Image
Angela Lansbury, top right, with cream colour lace background. Lovely Lace  I love lace. I have a white lace tablecloth covering a bookcase as my background on Zoom. But white lace doileys look old, shabby and old-fashioned. You can dye them deep colours. Use them as collars, neck fillers or dickeys. Solid colour lace is quite fashionable and available in 2022. My modern lace sleeve dress was polyester. The Design & Construction Lace can be made with strong thread, fine thread, or a mixture. Chantilly lace has strong threads linking intricate and delicate patterns of leaves and flowers. Black lace can be worn as a sophisticated evening fashion. For an evening shawl. In the old days it was considered romantic and luxurious. A lace shawl would be part of the trousseau of garments for a bride-to-be. A lace tablecloth with matching lace edge napkins might be a wedding gift. It can add delicacy and distraction at a funeral or time of mourning. You can create lace with a croch...

How To Re-Use Baby Clothes Sets, post 469

Image
An eyelet bonnet for a baby - worn by Angel. Photo by Angela Lansbury.. Copyright. The eBay picture of the baby dress which I bought for the accompanying broderie anglaise (eyelet) hat.  You can convert adult's clothes into children's clothes, and turn baby clothes into adult clothes. Cutting Down Adult Clothes When I was a child, my mother would cut up old, thinning and torn white sheets. All sheets were white. She had learned to re-use everything in World War 2. The war ended in 1945, but rationing in England, in the UK, went on until 1952. Keep For The Family Baby clothes sets can be kept, labelled, listed, in case you have another child.  Donation To Charity Or give them to charity. Some charities collect only perfect condition items. However, the most needy might accept a stained or torn item. For example, when I was clearing out the spare room cupboard for my French au pair girl, Caroline, in the 1980s, I said, "This baby outfit must be thrown away - it's stained...

Win some, lose some - my posture support garment online purchase was not a success, outfit 449

Image
I wanted back support. I have had support bras before. Then I saw a support vest - that seemed a good idea.  I like the idea of all in one, Then the band under your chest is not pressing on a bra. Admittedly, vests with built in bust support don't work on me. The padding slips sown so I end up looking like I have four breasts, no support. But this is different. I really do need posture help. The garment was quite expensive.  But I found one on ebay. Second hand.  Price The price was good. Until I saw the postage. Why so much? Postage from the USA and Ukraine can be large. This was from the Ukraine. I felt I would be lucky if it arrived at all. I like items from China, free postage. No nasty surprises at the end of the payment process.  However, I was by now psychologically committed and I had pressed the buy now button. Days passed. Finally it arrived! Size Uncertainty The confusing thing was the sizing. Was a PK size 5 a US size 5, really a UK seven? I reckone...
