The edging strip is on three sides because the fourth side is pleated and tucked into the waist of the petticoat. You can pin it to make it more secure. A complete outfit consists of three pieces, the saree length, the petticoat or underskirt, and the bolero which bares the midriff or covers it. Usually short sleeved for hot countries. The saree is worn in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and other parts of Asia and in Insian communities around the world. The pink saree fabric is a semi-see-through rough fabric. The edging strip is stiff with what feels like fine gold thread or wire, again, rough. I tried it around my neck and it was scratchy. I would say, gauze.
