Why Wear Pants (trousers) in summer? Dress of the Day 804 Macjay pants paired with a Primark rainbow stripe blouse.

Image
Insect Bites Problem  I was bitten twice by insects, once on each leg. I was not outdoors, but sitting at my desk. Anti insect spray, and insect repellent, had not protected me. Insect Bite Prevention The solution was to wear long trousers (Americans say pants). I looked in my pile of summer wear and found a pair of long, green, leg coverings. The Green Stretchy Trousers (Pants) The brand label was MACJAYS. Made in New Zealand. I must have bought them second hand from an op shop on holiday in New Zealand. They were size 14. A bit tight.  Deep Cuffs The cuffs were turned up. I tried to turn down the cuffs. they were sewn up both sides. One of them had become detached on one side. I cut the other one to match. That way I could pull them down, diagonally, or up. Macjays has stockists in New Zealand and Australia. For and Against Woman Wearing Trousers (Pants) For Wearing Trousers I used to wear trousers (long pants) when I was in my twenties. It saved the cost of buying tights (A...

Green top from Next. Whatever next? Dress of the day 721 by Angela Lansbury.

Image
Next green top worn by Angela Lansbury. Photo taken and edited by Angela Lansbury. Buttons - a big number Eight covered buttons, neat green to match the colour of the top. Ten more tiny buttons on each sleeve  Total 28. No spares. Size and Shape Next clothes are for the next generation, no longer teens, nor early twenties, so they should be designed for fuller figures. Also, not so absurd, more elegant. Next Size  Size 16. That copes with larger or changing weight. Flattering Design The design is flattering but practical. The knitted cuffs, and drawn in waist add to the illusion of curves and daintiness. But the stretchy bust and hips, and the ballooning upper arms, cover any overweight parts of the wearer. The sleeve design, leg of mutton sleeves, dates back to the 1800s. Next Shops My nearest Next shop is in Harrow.  How come they are so successful? They go back a long way, before you and I were born. A successful women's wear business merged with menswear and ad...

Indigo Moon Coats. Clothes With pockets. Dress of the day number 713 by Angela Lansbury.

Image
Indigo Moon coat with pockets worn by Angela Lansbury. Photo by Trevor Sharot. Edited (background cropped) by Angela Lansbury.  Indigo Moon Clothes Without And With Pockets  I love Indigo Moon clothes. The sequins. The fancy metal big buttons. No two alike. Individual. Despite being produced long ago, they are mostly in good condition. Some of them are flimsy without linings. I bought a dozen and none of them had pockets. Lots of jackets were available. Very few coats. No coats in my modest price range of under twenty pounds including postage of up to five pounds. Then I did a search for long coat or jacket with pockets. Up popped this one. Pockets! Indigo Moon Clothes Colours The coat was in dark green, almost black. Affordable. Not the bright colours I loved. Dismal green. Would I want to wear such a sombre colour? Would it suit me? Would it look right and co-ordinate with my other clothes? I took a chance. I ordered it.  Yes, the colour is dark, dull green.  Advan...

Which colour is that? Dress Post 688 by Angela Lansbury

Image
I was looking at metal soap dishes and up came an oval soap dish on the Dunelm website. It was offered in a colour which they called lilypad. My first thought was that a lily could be white or pink. Then I read a review which mentioned green. So I googled lily pad. Up came a website giving a colour reference number for lily pad green. I used to think that giving fanciful names such as heather or raspberry to clothes in clothes catalogues was a piece of marketing. Now I realise it is a more accurate way of describing colours, which may look different when photographed in daylight and in artificial light giving a yellow or other tone. On a screen the brightness may also affect colour.  Lily pad came up as a muted or slate green. I used to be puzzled by magenta.  Here are mystery colours and near equivalent names. 1 Amber - yellow (sometimes orange) 2 burgundy - dark red, almost brownish  3 Heather - purple pink 4 Indigo - blue 5 Khaki - creamy tan or pale yellowy brow...

Santa Hats in orange and other colours - and Russian Ded Moroz post 440

Image
Orange Santa hat. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright. "How did you get that Orange hat?" I asked. "Is it meant to be that colour?" "Yes, it's the company colour. The boss thought it was a good idea and ordered them for all of us at a company do." Originally the winter season character was dressed in green. The story goes that a department store, in the USA, or its advertising department, produced a Santa wearing jolly red, for a change. This was so popular that red became the company's colour, spread around the city, across the USA, and around the world. Russia has a Grandfather Frost in a different colour scheme, and can have a hat or red or blue or white. Summer Sunshine Yellow. Outfit/post 362

Image
Summer sunshine yellow. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright. Summer sunshine yellow. The yellow and green on the white tee-shirt match the yellow trousers. The black bag and brown shoes are hardly noticed. The black bag does have brown handles.  The eye-catching yellow effect was seen by me from some distance away. The pale brown shoes go with, echo, the wearer's pale brown hair. Top to toe. The perfect colour combination for a sunny summer day. You could wear yellow trousers with a white top for a colour block effect. But the yellow flowers creates a more delicate look. More subtle. More matching. Black summer Jacket over Anthony Sicari outfit 340

Image
Photo by Angela Lansbury. I had been wearing a loose hooded jacket all the rainy season of winter and spring in the UK and Europe. Then the weather turned summy for five minutes. My husband frowned at my jacket. So I looked for a lighter jacket without a hood. I found a lightweight black jacket. It was short, waist length, small enough not to create a clutter or need hanging up. The brand label is Wallis Exclusive. Made in the UK. Dry Clean - Why? The label warns, dry clean only. Why? Because if the fabric shrinks in washing. Or the lining is a different fabric so when you wash it, the seams pucker, the item hands wrongly, it is too tight. Or the colours run. Or this happens on high heat and in case the person washing makes a mistake they will complain or be dis satisfied with the product. I think if I am very careful to wash on cold, the garment will stay the same colour and not shrink. I don't dry clean anything. I would wash it or rince it in cold water and hang it up to dry, ho...

Rainbow Top From Primark, Necklace from Next - Bargains, post Dress of the Day 288

Image
Angela wearing a rainbow top from Priark, and green jacket from Shein. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright. The top From Primark. I bought it second hand from St Luke's. it was a bargain, in the one pound box for items which have not sold fast, or the occasional loss leader. (A loss leader is an item sold at a loss in order to attract customers, either to come in and buy that, and preferably return on a regular basis loiking for bargains. Primark sels clothes in the UK and elsewhere at affordable prices. to buy an item in the bargain bin in St Luke's is a double bargain. The Cape Jacket\The green cape jacket is from Shein. I bought it in a sale. I bought several cape jackets, mostly long, this one is short. I went into St Luke's looking for a condolence card. I found one. It cost 50p. a condolence card from Tesco would have cost me one pound fifty. I spent the same because I bought three cards, the other tow to go in my card stock box.  My other purchase from St Luke'...

Jacques Vert blouse from the Cancer Research Shop in Ilkley, Dress of the Day 596

Image
Angela Lansbury wearing a Jacques Vert blouse. Photo by Trevor Sharot. The Jacques Vert Top I was attracted by the bright red colour. I thought it would go with my skirt. The red and white is yin and yan. Suitable for Singapore's Natuonal day, August 9th, which features the red and white Singapore flag. The company  was founded in 1972 by Jack Cynamon and Alan Green. They combined the first name of one with the surname of the other and made it French to sound more exotic and sophisticated. Their clothes always suit me and usually last and last. The fabric is not cotton but polyester, which means it resists creasing. Although polyester fabric always strikes me as cheap, the cut and style of their clothes and the attention to detail, such as the fabric covered button fastening the neck, always makes the garments feel and look good, and seem stylish. The Long-sleeved White Blouse The blouse is white. The fabric is faintly striped, iridescent,  and stretchy. It feels comfor...

Orange dress from Marks & Spencer, 594, outfit in pale orange teamed with soft green

Image
Orange dress from Marks  & Spencer. Other items were gifts to the wearer, including the home made necklace. Photo by Angela Lansbury. I wear a lot of red, white and black. However, the soothing creamy green and orange combination worn by my new friend appealed to me. If you are looking for dresses in Marks & Spencer, in August (the Harrow branch in St Anne's outdoor shopping mall) had dresses for sale. I thought the prices were quite high, some reduced by as much as 70%, others by 30 to 50 per cent, several around forty pounds, others around thirty or about twenty. But tee-shirts included  an atractive one in white wiht a plam tree pattern in the centre, at under twenty pounds.   The sale was in August 2023. I expect that every year August will be the time to look in the sales.

Storage of Hair bows 574. Pink, black, white, which colours for different professions or times of day or occasions?

Image
Hair bow holder. Photo courtesy of funny, feisty, fashionista Faith. The pocket storage is from Diaso, from the Disney Princess range. Guess Faith's favourite colour? Pink. Pink is the modern colour for girls. Pink for girls and blue for boys. I read that the Victorians originally used the reverse colours.  Previously, pink was considered unsuitable for men. Then it became trendy. Queen Victoria made white wedding dresses popular. But the Chinese think red is lucky.  The Indians wear white for purity when burying the dead. They, too, would opt for a bright colour instead. Is pink the colour for romance, hearts for single hopeful women, dates for the single and date nights for the married. The Black Dress For Evenings and Businesslike Black In Daytime At one time the little black dress was de rigeur for evening wear. It was considered elegant, uncluttered, simple, sophisticated. What about daytime? Work? Would black and white look businesslike? Would black and white be m...

565 Green Gillian Dress of the Day, a vintage outfit with unusual cut insets

Image
Angela Lansbury wearing a green Gillian outfit. Photo by Trevor Sharot. This outfit consists of a long green skirt and matching top. The label is Gillian CLASSIC FEMME. Made in Korea.  Size 14.   Dry clean. I won't dry clean. Instead, I shall wear it with a black long sleeve vest underneath which I can wash daily.  The fabric is unusual. 70% polyester. So it does not crease.  20% Triasteit. I have never heard of that. The last 10 per cent is viscos (sic). Not viscose with an e at the end, v i s c o s. Hm? The Top The top has a lovely cut and an agreeable fabric. It has lightly padded shoulders. The sleeves are net. Stretchy net.  It feels comfortable. The Cut Of The Top The cut is most unusual. The back of the top is in three sections. Two curved lines down  from the shoulders.  It feels as if it fits well. It feels better than it looks. Size 14 is a little loose on me, since the post Covid-19, diet for a healthier weight. But the charm of ...

Outfit 592 Red, a white and green outfit, the Italian flag colours, for an Italian Restaurant

Image
Angela wearing red, white and green, the colours of the Italia flag. Photo by Trevor Sharot. For a trip to a dinner at an Italian restaurant, featuring Italian wines, I planned on wearing the colours of the Italian flag, red, white and green. Oops. I am glad I loaded up the flag. It is green, white and red. In my Italian colours outfit, the skirt is green, the shoes are red, the jacket is red, the top is red and white. I don't think anybody except me noticed the significance of the colours. If the Italian tourist board had been there, giving out little Italian flags, they would have noticed. Red Jacket The red jacket is also called a cape blazer. Sometimes described as open sleeve. The label is Be Jealous. The red jacket adds vivid colour to accentuate the red in the red and white top. You can see another view of the red jacket in another outfit in post on dress of the day 586. Red cape blazer. Red and white top with ruched sleeves. Red Free=step sandals. Champagne and Winter Red and Green, dress of the day 572

Christmas in green and white. Ann Summers outfit. Dress of the day, or year, number 565.

Image
Angela Lansbury wearing a green Christmas outfit from Ann Summers. Photo by Trevor Sharot. I put on the orange-red neck warmer from Patra in the UK. Neck Warmer The brand is from Patra, from the UK, not the Patra in the USA. These neck warmers are available in several colours. Light. Handy cover-up for a low neck. Mostly silk so it is soft, and not bulky. Skirt The red skirt is labelled Anthony Evenings. This seems to be a brand of Anthony Sicari. I bought it second hand on either Ebay or Etsy from the USA. It is part of a suit, size 22.   It was much too large for me, so I tightened the skirt with large safety pins. I meant to sew it, but never got around to it. The fabric is thick, so the safety pins are not pulling out nor tearing the fabric.  The Green Xmas Outfit The popular story says that the original Santa was dressed in winter green, like a Christmas tree, or holly. Red was supposedly a colour chosen for a change by the artist for an advertisement for a departm...

Sukkot Clothes: fruit patterns, lemons, colours, blue + Ann Balon Embroidered Dyed Dress & Jacket 102 from 2020 with updates in 2022.Post 524.

Image
Angela Lansbury wearing a pink Ann Balon dress in a blue Sukkah, holding a piece of fruit. Sharot family photo. This was what I wore for supper in a sukkah a couple of years ago, in 2020. In the photo you can see I was wearing a dusty pink dress, brand Ann Balon. The dress and matching jacket had lace appliqu é .  The Colours of The Clothes I thought Ann Balon's dusty pink was dull on my complexion, corpse colour so I tried dyeing it with Dylon powder dye from a box. I decided to just do the edges to see if I liked the color. I liked the effect of the contrast color edges. No need to do any more. Besides, the dye made such a mess in the bath, overflowing the plastic bowl, dripping as the clothes hung over the bath on hangers, that I decided not to do any more dyeing. Blue The colour of the awning and sides of this sukkah are blue. Blue is the colour of the magen David (star of David) on the Israeli flag. When I saw it, I thought, oops, I should have worn blue. Of course to w...

A Green Primark Night Dress - or a red day dress, dress of the day 413

Image
Green night dress from Primark. Selfie photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright. The Price Was Right My green night dress from Primark cost only 5 UK pounds. Pounds, Euros or dollars? Whatever. Pounds. It was a bargain. Advantages Weight It is lightweight. I can wear it as a summer dress or night dress.  Colour The colour goes well with blonde hair. Disadvantages - Cling It is a bit clingy. So it shows if you have eaten too much and have a bulging tummy.  Or a lopsided bust. Or a droopy bust if you are not wearing a bra. The Hurry Dress It is a great dress to wear in a hurry. Somebody is knocking at the door? To get out of the shower in a hotel room. To answer the door to the postman. (I suppose I should say post person, or post deliverer.) Anyway, it is a great slip on, pull on, in a hurry dress. Like a caftan. But more shaped. NW London branches are in Watford, Wembley, Ealing and Uxbridge. All with different closing times. The Harrow branch is open 9-7 pm. On Sunday 10.30...

Eyelet (broderie Anglaise) dresses or tops, where to buy them in white, pink, black, blue, and green, dress 378

On March 17th I wrote about my friend's red eyelet dress from Thailand, which I admired. A week or two we met again and she was wearing a white eyelet dress. This time she said she had bought it in Singapore and it was a Singapore brand and she would take me to the shop which sold it, The Stage Walk in Junction 8 at Bishan.  Selfie photo by Angela Lansbury. Instant Leprechaun Hat: Green ribbons on a Daiso Happy Birthday Hat. Dress 359.

Image
I was giving a speech about St Patrick's Day at a Toastmasters International speakers' training club. The previous speaker was evaluated. The evaluator complimented the speaker on being dressed appropriately to match the speech subject.   Oops. I need a suitable hat or scarf to go with my speech. I looked at the outfits online. Not just free tee-shirts. Most of the people worthy of being photographed were wearing high hats, like leprechauns.   How to make a hat? I could take a baseball hat and cover it in green fabric. No green fabric? I could print green and fold the paper. How to fold it? Use the baseball hat as the base, with green paper over the brim and crown. The crown was the wrong shape. I could make a cake shape, circular with a flat top.  I looked at my hats and my eyes discovered my happy birthday Daiso mini hat.  Angela Lansbury in Daiso Happy Birthday hat. Selfie. Much easier to cover in a hurry. I didn't even need fabric. A couple of pieces of gree...
