I spent a long time organizing my odd socks. I am keeping socks in pairs in leftover compartmentalized orange boxed which neighbours threw out after Chinese New Year in Singapore. I still have several odd socks. Why? I found one behind a washing machine and tumbler dryer when we moved them. I found another under the bed, when I moved it. I found another in a boot. One day I considered throwing away a sock which had holes, rather than repairing it. I realized that if you throw away a worn out sock, you forget that the other one of the pair is orphaned and you keep searching for its missing partner.  You can get around this by buying two or three pairs of matching socks. (Or more.) Then, when you throw away one, you still have a pair.
