Monsoon label white hat with faux fur pompom and pretty pearls. Outfit of the day 722 by Angela Lansbury.

Image
Where I buy bargains  I bought this in St Luke's charity shop which raises funds supporting hospices in London. It cost one pound from the rummage box of second hand scarves and hats and gloves.  These shops are all over north London.  Why Buy A Bargain Hat Or Scarf? I like a bargain. I like something new - new to me. If I am supporting a charity, too, that's good. I need to limit my spending on clothes. And the amount of space they take up in my home, so a small hat is good. A foldable knitted hat or woven scarf  can be squashed up beside the others. Child Size Hats I tried it on and fitted. You can imagine my eyes widening in surprise when I got home and read the label. It was for 3-6 years! It is stretchy. It could have said fits all sizes. But the label inside warns that it is unsuitable for children under the age of 3 because of small parts. Advantages Of Checking Children's Hats Now I know that I can look at children's hats and try them on to see if they fit me...

What the news at home and overseas tells us about travel and travel outfits - warnings and good news - Halloween Hat Outfit 405

Image
What does the news tell travellers? The weather. The Seasonal holidays. What you should wear outdoors and indoors. Weather Warnings What to wear tomorrow.  What to pack for your destination. Whether you might want to cancel your trip, or your trip might be diverted. Whether there are parades blocking roads. Or storms diverting flights. In winter, will you have cancelled meetings? No news is good news, goes the old saying. Because newspaper headlines and the ones which grab out attention are often about wars, individual deaths, murders, accidents robberies and scams.  Those Who Avoid Bad News I have one friend who has a sick, elderly husband.  Yet she is very active in the community. She goes to art exhibitions. But she says she doesn't read the news because it is depressing.  I, on the other hand, read the news because it is vital to me when I am travelling.  Diversions & Delays I always remember 9/11, when I and my husband were in Singapore. A friend in Sin...

Clothing Swap Post 259

Image
How do you dispose of old clothes creating clutter? Buy new clothes cheaply for growing childen?  America has lots of shops for second hand clothing and clothes sold on consignment, pay when you buy, receive money for good taken to the shop or when they eventually sell.  In Singapore there's a chain of outlets called ReFash. I shopped in two of them. One is in Bukit Panjang in the NW, at the end of the Downtown line. In Australia, a swap system has just been featured and promoted. It works on getting a credit or token for items you leave. Another system has an entry fee which allows you to take up to five items. Of course there's the online bidding system, ebay. That would involve you packaging and posting up and taking photos. And paying tax on earnings.  Useful Websites  https://www.goodnet.org/articles/clothing-exchanges-are-becoming-more-popular?utm_source=inb_goodnet&utm_medium=inbound&utm_campaign=inb_goodnet&dicbo=v4-6pKj7rU-1131219455 Please share...

Anthony Sicari, Blue three-piece suit, Post 585 - a critical look at the photo by a bystander

Image
Taken in the Queens Head pub in Pinner, N W London, England, UK. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright. Anthony Sicari 3 piece This blue 3 piece Anthony Sicari outfit suit consists of a long ankle-length skirt, and jacket, with a scarf. I see a lot of Anthony Sicari outfits on Ebay. I buy when I see three pieces, ideally at a reasonable price. The jacket has 7 large round buttons, metalic blue and gilt. Seven buttonholes.  Long Sleeves Warning About Buttonholes All the buttonholes are slightly loose and fraying. You don't notice when the jacket is done up. But they might need sewing later. The washing instructions are: hand wash. Lay flat to dry. Do not iron. Do not bleach.  That's easy.  And inexpensive. Just hand wash. No need to spend money on dry cleaning, nor electricity for ironing. No need to spend time ironing nor going to the dry cleaners. Wearing Style The skirt is unlined. Therefore, I wore it with a long black half slip. The skirt feels light. Fabric ...

Valentine's Day Black Hearts from Shein, and Red jacket, dress of the day 586

Image
Angela Lansbury, wearing top from Shein with black hears. Photo by Trevor Sharot. Red Jacket The red jacket is also called a cape blazer. Sometimes described as open sleeve. The label is Be Jealous. Adds colour to liven up the black and white. Red Hat Less than ten pounds. I have them in several colours. I didn't buy them all at once. I didn't want to make a mistake nor break the budget. I bought one to see if the fabric was right. Then re-ordered every now and then. White top with Black hearts The white top with small black hearts comes from Shein. The hearts are small. Subtle. Don't show up well on a photo or if covered by a jacket.  Black and white are easy to match with other clothes. black and white for summer and winter, day and evening. Dress 563 What is a Slipper? A thong? A Flip-Flop? UK English, Indian language, Americanisms

Image
Footwear is described differently in countries around the world as I discovered to my dismay. Thongs in Australia  In Australia I went into a beachside bar. A sign on the door said, No thongs. Okay, I was properly dressed in a wrap skirt, no thong underwear revealing buttocks. The barman said, "No thongs." I replied, "That is okay. I am not wearing thongs." He replied, "I can see you are wearing thongs." I was puzzled. How could he see my underwear. Through my clothes? Visible panty line? In any case, he had made a mistake. I was not wearing thong underwear. So, I said, "I am not wearing thongs. How can you see thongs?" He pointed to my feet, "Those are thongs. On your feet. You ARE wearing thongs!" I looked down, and said, "You mean my flip-flops? You call them thongs?" "Yes." "Ah!" Luckily I had other shoes in the boot of the car nearby.  Indian Slippers A second misunderstanding happened in the UK. A fr...

More places to buy and sell second hand clothes, post 539

Image
The internet offers you a host of chances to buy and sell. Lt's look at them alphabetically. Aliexpress began in and is based in China. It began as business to business but now puts you the consumer in touch with sellers. Amazon in Seattle in the USA has a free audio tour of its headquarters. eBid has categories such as: Clothes, shoes, accessories; Jewelry and watches (American spelling), and Whatever's left. ebuygumm appears to be UK only. Lazada started in Asia. Here's the Lazada office in Singapore. On most sites nowadays the buyer can specify a price range, or search low to high or high to low. Other options are sizes, brand names, and fabrics. Money for old clothes? Buy and sell through Carousell in Singapore, Asia, Australia or Ebay, Etsy, Vinted (Europe and Americas) and many more in the UK, USA and worldwide Post 537

Image
In Singapore a good place for selling and buying second hand clothes is refash. I have found them good for buying second hand clothes. I used two branches. One is in Changi Point, near the Expo MRT, one stop from Changi Airport. Another place is Carousell. If you are puzzling over the spelling, the usual spelling of the word carousel, which the British call a roundabout, is carousel, but the company name word ends Sell, with a double ll, as in buying and selling. Wiki explains Carousell logo Carousell  is a  Singaporean   smartphone  and web-based  consumer to consumer  and  business to consumer  marketplace for buying and selling new and secondhand goods. Headquartered in Singapore, it also operates in Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, [1]  Cambodia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, [2]  Australia, New Zealand and Canada. [3]  Carousell is available on both  iOS  and  Android  devices. The UK and Europe - Ebay The ...

Wedding Dresses & Outdoor Venues Post 500

Image
American Weddings Brightline is a privately owned railway  line which has served as a marriage venue for a wedding in 2022.  I have witnessed a wedding (as the official witness) on a cruise ship out of Florida, but this is the first time I have heard of a wedding on a train. The train wedding couple did not meet on the train. They met when the husband to be was renting property (Americans say leasing) from his bride-to be. They had many dates taking the train and the bride thought the train ride was the most romantic part of the date.  The train company sectioned off part of the train for the ceremony and reception afterwards. Photos were taken on the train and at the station.  UK Weddings In England I have seen many reports of unusual carriages to the wedding venue, usually connected with the jobs of one of the spouses or their family. A nostalgic horse and carriage is quite common.  I recall a double decker bus being used. Also I recall one case of the b...

Angela wearing a black dress with white polka-dots from label Yours. Photo by Trevor Sharot. Yours is a company which supplies plus size clothes for men and women. Their label has a red heart in front of the name, as does the website banner. Their strapline is Queen of Curves.   Buyers & Sellers Of Large Size Clothes Isn't everybody dieting? Yes, but British people, and Americans, are notoriously putting on weight. The Dutch and Scandinavians have grown taller with better nutrition since WW2. People are living longer so more reach the age of Middle Age Spread. Immigration adds to the mix. An influx into the UK, especially London around Heathrow, of red hot mamas with large families from India and the Caribbean and other countries, as a result there is a market for large clothes.  (In Singapore I had trouble finding average size clothes. There the Chinese have small frames. The average age when I arrived was under 30. So I had to go to Mustafa's department store in Lit...

Karen Millen Dress, Green, Sleeveless, favourite and the history of the K M label, shops and company, dress 487

Image
You might have seen this green, sleeveless dress previously under the blue blouse, acting like a skirt.  The dress is under a blue jacket in post 478. The green dress is in post 480, about the silver necklace. Today I am wearing the dress over the blue blouse. My dress is so handy, goes with lots of blues. Does not crease. Good length. Slightly shaped, not baggy but loose enough to be comfortable. I wondered of Karen Millen was a made up or changed name. At first I kept typing Miller. Then I got to know the name. Karen Millen is a real person. Wiki told me the whole story. I shall condense it here: Karen Millen studied fashion at the Medway College of Design which is now known as  University for the Creative Arts . [3] The company was founded in 1981 when Millen partnered with Kevin Stanford.  Karen Millen acquired the assets of its sister company, Coast, out of administration in October 2018. [9]  In August 2019, the two companies' online businesses were bought out ...
