Safety hiking hats and equipment you need in summer and winter, post 571

A recent story about the fatal loss of a girl hiking alone in the USA set me thinking after reading the newspaper comments. What might you need? Season Hiking in winter is not hiking in summer Weather forecast for your hiking region (not only the area where you drive from) Clothing Hiking Hats I look for sun protection, SVF +50, and a strap to stop the hat falling off. i like a hood on my jacket, so that even if I forget the hat, the hood protects me. The hood helps secure the hat, and protects the back of your neck. It is one less thing to carry. Fabrics In summer I wear Mosiprroof sunscreen fabrics (eg mosigard) Insulated/waterproof boots/Hiking shoes (not just sneakers or tennis shoes) Gloves - features  With ribbon to attach to coat so you don't drop them.  Touch-sensitive gloves so that you can operate a phone with gloves on. Waterproof.  Pockets Pickpocket proof Zip up pockets so items cannot fall out Maps Add a map of your planned route on your phone. it can be sha...

The Stupidest Straw Hat? Pretty pink, but frayed and fraying further. Outfit 482. Oops! Nicaraguan and Hawaian beachcomber hats

Angela Lansbury wearing a pink, straw, fraying, beachcomber hat. Photo selfie by Angela Lansbury.    I thought I wasn't wearing my glasses. My hat straw got in the way.  The straw was over my eyes and so my glasses focussed on the straw. I had to tilt my head to see under the straw. I thought I wasn't wearing glasses. Those annoying straws interfered with my vision. I didn't like those prickly spokey, spikey straws on my face, near my mouth and nose and eyes. And on my shoulders.  I took off the hat. I looked it up online. It was a style called Beachcomber. Plenty like it.  I hunted for fixing it. You can make them waterproof with a spray of Shellac. But nowhere were instructions for plaiting up the edges and sealing them down. It would take hours. Then clear nail varnish? Or sew in a circle? Then cut back the protruding spikes? I tried it on the other way round. Ah! The hat was not stupid. I was stupid. The hat bent upwards over the forehead and hung down at th...

Dress of the day 250, new vintage 4 piece Anthony Sicari summer skirt suit in white with turquoise and pastels

Image
Anthony Sicari outfits come with a matching scarf. Usually skirt, top and scarf, or skirt, top and jacket and scarf. You often find a top offered on its own. I suspect they have become detached from the full outfit. I like Anthony Sicari outfits because they are loose and baggy. This was important when buying on the internet to be sure the items would fit. The colours of this outfit are more suited to spring or summer. Mostly white. Colours Most of the outfits I see are for autumn or winter with a heavy knit bodice to the top,. Often the colour of the knitted part in a dark blue or red or black with vibrant contrasting satiny inset or appliqe. I keep a constant watch on ebay. If you live in the USA or UK, you are in luck. You save on the postage.  Angela's Accessories  White fabric hat brim with velcro at the back. From Walker's Hat Shop, Descanso, California. USA The hat brim is washable. The lace makes it more dressy. The white shoes are Les Jumelles (french for twins)...
