Long indian skirt - washing, wearing and shortening options post 544

Image
I love the colours of this Indian skirt. I bought it for one pound in St Luke's shop in Hatch End. I've seen other St Luke's shops in Stanmore and Pinner. Their website lists several more locations in London and elsewhere. The Plus - Colour and Length The skirt is made in India, and 100 per cent cotton. A very thick cotton.  Washing Obligation and Options Many people wash everything they buy, new or old, to protect themselves from germs. Whatever you buy might be handled by many people. The donor. The person applying a price ticket. Customers rummaging. The shop assistant wrapping it for you. If I tie it around my neck, it is against my skin. So, to be cuatious, I should wash it before wearing, even before handling it.  I could just hrow everything in a wash.  I could follow the washing instructions on the label. Or my common sense about cotton and items which are not colourfast. Put it in the machine and make sure not to wash it with anything white or pale coloure...

I wanted a long zip. About 36 inches. To turn a wrap around towelling bath or beach robe, for the swimming pool, into a zip up version by sewing in a zip. I measured in inches and centimeters. I tried to buy on Amazon.  Amazon I could buy a set of about 8 zips in assorted colours. Great.  But the price of postage etc bumped up the price. How to make a belt quickly to pull a loose dress into a form fitting dress 502

Image
Angela Lansbury, wearing a red loose dress, pulled in by a diy ribbon belt. Photo by Trevor Sharort. How To Make A belt All you need is a piece of ribbon in one of the colours in your dress. Alternatively, match the accessories such as the shoes and matching bag, or slip. I looked at another dress I had with a belt consisting of two halves from either side of the waist to tie at the back. The belt was made from two seamed pieces of fabric of the same material as the dress. I did not have spare fabric and did not want to cut off the hem. I looked at my rolls of red ribbon. The only piece long enough was very narrow. I presume it was the sort sold for tying parcels at Christmas. It had a gold edge.  The advantage of narrow ribbon is that you would only need half a dozen stitches to sew it on. I folded the ends back and sewed it on horizontally, pointing towards the back.  We were rushing out to lunch. I did not have time to sew on the second half. What could I do? I found...

Dress of the day 254. Going grunge. Upcycling. Convert a girl's embroidered, embellished denim trousers into a woman's skirt.

Angela going grunge. Photo by Trevor Sharot. The magic of this outfit is the converted too small jeans. The top is the easy bit. If you have a small jacket, just leave it undone. And/or enlarge the sleeve holes. Or slit it down the sides and wear it as a tabard. To hold it in place, my favourite easy adjustment, add two ribbons. All you do is sew on two small pieces of ribbon. Buy ribbons cheaply from a cut price store. Or borrow the rope or fabric handles from paper tote bags which you and other people throw out. The Top Alice Fashion Shop VIP  The label says NTS 400. Pockets It has two small pockets. They do not do up securely. Large enough for a paper hanky or key. Buttons The pockets are both decorated with one button which says JEANS, in capital letters, rivetted on. The metal buttons on the pockets are the same size as the five buttons down the front, which just about go through the cut open buttonholes. Another button is on each epaulette. I had not noticed the epaule...
