British Policeman's Hat & Clothes to wear, dress 142,: English, Scottish, Welsh - and back in time through British fashions, movies and music

 

To show your ancestry or affinity with the UK or recall a holiday or plan one, you can get all kinds of clothes bearing the union jack.


Here's a tartan, very British.

The flag of England, a red cross on a white background. It forms part of the Union Jack flag.

Best time to buy bargains? From British supermarkets the week after a football match featuring the England national team. A couple of days after Shakespeare's birthday.

Speaking of whom, tee-shirts with pictures of Shakespeare. Anything from Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, or Charles Dickens.

White Wedding Dresses

White wedding dresses, made popular by the British royal family. British - surely white wedding dresses are universal? No. The Chinese like red. In Asia, white is the colour of mourning.

British English

I love to hear English with an upper class accent. I especially like the characters in the film The Ladykillers. Every word is clear. Even the villains are a delight to listen to. It is a film a recommend to people who want to learn English from films. Which clothes can you wear?

For a formal wedding wear, men in grey tail coats.

For the UK, men going to work in the 1950s, a bowler hat and a waistcoat.


A British policeman's hat is also traditional.



 

You can buy a plastic version in toy shops and fancy dress shops, and for Xmas and New Year's Eve parties.

Scottish Dress

The Scottish dress of the kilt is appropriate wear for New Year's Eve, especially if you have Scottish ancestors, and also for Burns night in January.



Or wear a Sherlock Holmes deerstalker hat, with the pieces which can turn down over the ears or be tied up over the crown of your head. You can also buy deerstalker hats for women. 

I also like the Queen's Speech, or rather the Christmas Message. (The Queen's speech is what she delivers when opening Parliament.) A good film to watch would be The King's Speech.

The red and white Santa costume, supposedly made popular in the USA, is now universally recognized and worn. In the UK, called Father Christmas. (In Russia and

Welsh is wonderfully sing-song and makes me smile. But useless for romance, because it makes me giggle. I once listened to a Welshman on the phone trying to romance me. I could not take him seriously.  

However, listen to the Dylan Thomas, reading his own work, under Milk Wood, or Richard Burton. I went to the museum in Caerleon, Wales, several times, because most years I go to the Writers' Holiday which used to be held in Caerleon at the University, but has now moved to the Fishguard Bay hotel, where Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor stayed. 

At the Fishguard town museum, in a green building on the main square, you can visit for free the museum with the tapestry telling the story of the Last Invasion, and see the Welsh traditional costume, of a red clothing and a tall black hat - for women.



Mellifluous Music From Welsh Harps

When listening to music even accents which don't make sense or don't appeal can sound wonderful and evocative.  Welsh with harps. With Zoom backgrounds, you could put up a background of a Welsh harp or a Welsh traditional costume, whilst talking about Wales or singing a Welsh song.

What is this? My repair.  I have a lovely shiny, smart black slip, from Marks & Spencers. It has a slit with pretty lace edging.  But it is slightly tight. It tore from the top of the slit, diagonally.  I looked for another slip. The ones I found onlin were twice the price and not in a satiny fabric. I wore it torn. I repaired it several times. Blue H & M Dress, dress of the day 393

But I had a white blouse, so I wore this. On the internet and on Facebook you can see lots of videos of how to tie a scarf, but mine is simply hanging, which partly obscures the cleavage.  Cleavage cover I had a choice. To insert a dickey or false front, also called a removable or detachable collar. I have one or two which are plain white.  The alternative which saves hunting for a matching dickey without distracting collar colours and embrodiery, is simply to add a fastening. I decided that a snap or press stud fastener in small size is qhich to fasten and unlikely to pull apart (as opposed to hook and eye. I like velcro but it can scratch your skin, so the press stud was the right andwer. You have to get the two sides exactly measured up from the point of the V neck otherwide you end up with...

Period Pants from Marks & Spencer & More, post 345

Period pants from Savida. Pants, UK. In the USA they would be called underpants. They come in two colours, black or dark blue with a mottled effect. They are triple layer. Could be useful for hiking and travelling. Or when you have a cough.  A pack of three full briefs for fifteen pounds. I then googled period pants and found lots of results.  Marks Marks & Spencer do a pack of three containing three different colours, black, white and pink, for sixteen pounds.  They also do different absorbencies. The options range though light, heavy, and extra heavy. And more styles, such as pantaloon style, like short tight shorts coming half way down your thighs.
