Colours

 

Looking carefully at the night dress pattern, I notice that it has more than one shade of blue. The  pale blue is the background, with darker blue. Other colours are red, yellow, and lavender. 

The Cut
Hardly visible is the pocket on the  left breast (on the right of the picture). The night dress is ankle length. The sleeves are short. 

The Pattern

The first thing you notice is the hanukiah or nine branch candlestick. Eight branches for the eight days of Hanukah; the ninth candle in the middle is for lighting the others.  

The dreidls, or four-sided spinning tops, have four Hebrew letters.

The circles, which I had not noticed until today, .are in two shades of yellow. The circles represent the Hanukah coins. Nowadays children and adults are given gold covered chocolate coins.

I bought this night dress in the USA, in Rockville, Maryland, on the outskirts of Washington DC, when we were living there. The night dress was a bargain reduced price in around December 1986 in the post hanukah sale in the local clothes shop which had sales all season. One sale ended and the next sale started.

I just looked up the Hanukah dates for 1986 and 1987. In 1986 the eight days of Hanukah were December 26th to January 3rd.  The following year, 1987, the dates were December 15th to December 23rd. So, some time between  December 14th and January 4th I went into a shop and found a Hanukah night dress on sale.

Many t-shirts and sweatshirts with hanukah themes are available from Amazon, also socks, santa style conical hats and t-shirts with humorous of multi-faith messages.

If you don't see what you like, you can make your own design or take a photograph and paint it or print it onto a t-shirt or cushion cover, or fabric.

The ultimate DIY activity would be to print a photo of a menorah or hanukiah onto a cushion or t-shirt or fabric. Or paint onto a kit for painting t-shirt or scarves.

What is this? My repair.  I have a lovely shiny, smart black slip, from Marks & Spencers. It has a slit with pretty lace edging.  But it is slightly tight. Blue H & M Dress, dress of the day 393

But I had a white blouse, so I wore this. On the internet and on Facebook you can see lots of videos of how to tie a scarf, but mine is simply hanging, which partly obscures the cleavage.  Cleavage cover I had a choice. To insert a dickey or false front, also called a removable or detachable collar. I have one or two which are plain white.  The alternative which saves hunting for a matching dickey without distracting collar colours and embrodiery, is simply to add a fastening. I decided that a snap or press stud fastener in small size is qhich to fasten and unlikely to pull apart (as opposed to hook and eye. Period Pants from Marks & Spencer & More, post 345

Period pants from Savida. Pants, UK. In the USA they would be called underpants. They come in two colours, black or dark blue with a mottled effect. They are triple layer. Could be useful for hiking and travelling. Or when you have a cough.  A pack of three full briefs for fifteen pounds. I then googled period pants and found lots of results.  Marks Marks & Spencer do a pack of three containing three different colours, black, white and pink, for sixteen pounds.  They also do different absorbencies. The options range though light, heavy, and extra heavy. And more styles, such as pantaloon style, like short tight shorts coming half way down your thighs.
