Colour Variations

What do you call colours? In modern times in English we have seen colours you learn in school expanded, called magenta, taupe, teal, lavender, olive. 

Colour Charts

We can find charts of paint colours and mix up colours at DIY shops. 

Clothes colour advisor systems give us charts of spring, summer, autumn or winder colours to match our complexions. 

Lipsticks and rouge and blemish covers come in different shades.

Hair tints are in different colours and numbers.

Printing and computing have numbers for specific colours.

Colour in Languages

We learn that languages are different.  Russian and Hebrew and Turkish name and distinguish two different colours of blue which we might distinguish as variants of blue, calling them pale blue and navy blue. 

The colours of the rainbow have memory aids (mnemonics). As children many of us were taught: red orange yellow green blue indigo violet. The popular memory aid was the sentence Read Out Your Green Book In Verse. Another memory aid specific to the UK using UK history was Richard of York Gave Battle In Vain.

BLACK

BLUE

Baby blue, baby blue eyes, beau blue, beautiful blue, beautiful in blue, bluetiful (Crayola); cyan, sky blue, blue bra, blue bag, blue bracelet, blue blocks, indigo blue, blue jeans, cornflower blue, denim blue, lapis lazuli, little boy blue, metalic blue, midnight blue, navy blue, royal blue, blueberry, blue-green, blue-grey, sapphire, blue blouse, bright blue. Contrasts: blue and pink, blue and silver, red, white and blue.


BROWN

Beautiful brown, burnt umber, businesslike brown, chestnut brown, chocolate brown, coffee colour, brown bag, brown bracelet, brown blocks, brown blouse, earth brown, khaki, khahi camouflage, pine tree brown, tree bark brown, brown sugar, brown bra and pants, tan, suntan, walnut, maroon, rust, autumn, bright brown. Tuscan tan. Contrast: brown and yellow.


COLOUR

Autumn colour, cancelling colour, cool colour, co-ordinating colour, contrasting colour, dark colour, fall colour, hot colours, matt colour, muted colour, pale colour, pastel colour, shiny colour, colour spectrum, winter colour, dappled, shades of colour.


GOLD

Gorgeous gold, gleaming gold, glitter gold, glittering gold, gold leaf, rose gold (iphone cover colour). Old gold.


GRAY

Ash gray, calm gray, granite gray, calm gray, adaptable gray, versatile gray, modest gray, inconspicuous gray, office gray, dirt gray, dirty gray, dust gray, dusty gray, mould gray, shadow gray, pale gray, dark gray, pebble gray, cobblestone gray, dove gray, slate gray. 


GREEN

Acid green, army green, British racing green, bottle green, Emerald Green, Gorgeous Green, Granny Smith Apple, grape green, grass green, jade green, jungle green, leaf green, lemon lime green, lime green, moss green, mysterious moss green, pea green, pistacchio green, sea green, go green, turquoise, gleaming green, glowing green, mint, mint green, mountain meadow. INDIGO

Indigo blue.


MAGENTA

Magical magenta, marvellous magenta. 


MIXed or MULTICOLOUR

Marvellous multicolour (UK / British style/Commonwealth spelling), multicolor (US spelling), mottled, mixed, colour block, striped, mosaic, plaid, plaited, chessboard, mix and match, psychedelic, rainbow, paintbox, palette, camouflage, leopard spots, tiger stripes, polka dot, tie dye, symbol, logo, patch, patchwork, quilted. Varied, various. Red, white and blue. Tricolor (green, red and white colours of the Italian flag, used in appetizers).


ORANGE

Amber, autumn orange, fall leaf orange, mandarin orange, odd orange, outrageous orange, pumpkin orange, tangerine.



PINK

Champagne pink, Champagne pink shoes, Cute Coral pink, party pink, Pearly pink, Perfect pink, pink flamingo, pretty pink, pure pink, pink panties, pink pants, pink grapefruit. Fashon fuschia. French Fuschia.


PURPLE

Beetroot, pale purple, plum, plum purple, Purple pizzazz, purple panties, purple pants. Lilac or light purple. or Lavender. Mauve, mauvelous, marvelous mauve, muddy mauve, violet, vibrant violet, victorious violet. (See magenta.)

SILVER

Sequin silver, shimmering, silver plate silver, silver sea, silver stripes, silver skirt, silver birch, silver set, silver socks, silver grey. Sonic silver. Contrast: silver and gold.


YELLOW

Banana yellow, blonde, canary yellow, light blonde, butter yellow, daffodil yellow, lemon yellow, mellow yellow, mustard. Contrast: bee colours, yellow and brown, yellow and green, red, yellow and orange.


WHITE

Alabaster, antique lace, bone, Bright white, cloud white, cream, creamy, eggshell, frost, ghost white, icing sugar white, Moonlight white, off-white, powder, silver birch, snow white, sugar cube white, Wonderful White, white smoke, ice white, rice white, vanilla, ivory. Contrast: black and white; ebony and ivory, checkerboard, dogtooth, tweed. Magnolia.

Paint colours include many shades of white such as apple (green tinge) white.
