Champagne cork, safely sealed. Photo by Angela Lansbury. G H Mumm champagne Brut Cordon Rouge, and the cork with the wire  Photo by Angela Lansbury. Champagne buying and storing If you are on the email list of any supermarket or wine supplier, you may be getting lots of offers of Champagne, premium brands at high prices, or discounts. You might want to stock up for your next birthday or wedding anniversary. Champagnes and white wines are sold in dark green bottles to protect the contents from the light. A dark place, and a cool place, and one where temperatures do not fluctuate, is best. If the bottle has a cork, you need to store it horizontally to preserve the wine. Otherwise the cork dries out and shrinks and air gets in and spoils the wine. It turns to vinegar, acidic. The aromas escape. If in doubt, ask about storage when you buy or consult the seller's website, the supermarkets, the importers, the producers. The wire cage around the cork is to prevent any accidents, accidenta...

Pockets Sewn Shut In New Garments - What should you do? When you need pockets, how to unpick or add pockets.

Image
Pockets sewn shut are not a new idea. Whenever I look at pockets sewn shut, I think of the way they were sewn shut at the turn of the century - not this century, the last one, the year 1900.  Pockets were sewn shut on the uniforms given for free to the children at the Jewish Free school in the East End of London. That school, which most of us have now forgotten, was then not only the largest school in London, but also in the UK, and the largest school in Europe, with more than a thousand pupils.  Why were the pockets sewn shut? The whole of London had been shocked by Dickens story of Oliver Twist and the child pickpockets. So the sewn pockets had a dual purpose. Not so much that nobody had pockets which could be picked, More that the Jewish children would not slouch. The Rothschilds funded the school to give all the poor Jewish children an education, leading to gainful employment and respectability. (I discovered this when researching my novel.) Nowadays there are other reason...

Clothing Company Names, Labels and Brands

Image
I used to wonder why a company would choose a different brand name. Surely, if you buy from Marks & Spencer, or Sainsbury's, or Primark, that label tells you enough. Then I found out why they change brand names.  Some of these companies sell worldwide, although you might find more stores in their home country.  Update July 24 2023 Not only to they have different names for clothes for men, women, and children, sometimes for teens, for classic and modern, for businesslike and for sexy/disco wear, for luxury three piece lined clothes with double stitching and spare buttons for mother of the brides which are dry clean only, and for skimpy, light crop tops you can wash in a machine or wash by hand. For example Asda - George H & M (Swedish) Levi Strauss & Co - Levis (started in the USA) Mango - Violeta, Mango Teen (Spanish, in Turkey and worldwide) Morrison's - Nutmeg (UK) Next - F & F Primark - Atmosphere Sainsbury's - Tu Brands The same company could have dif...

The Red Champagne for Xmas and New Year's Eve and Chinese New Year

Image
G H Mumm Champagne Brut Cordon Rouge.  Photo by Angela Lansbury. My husband chose this Champagne. Champagne comes from the Champagne region of France. It is a dry wine, hence the word Brut, meaning dry.  Champagne is a sparkling white wine, made with red skinned grapes. I kid you not. This one is made from a grape called pinot noir. Noir is French for black. In English we have red and black grapes but in wine making most grapes are black. Rouge is the French word for red. It has also come to mean red cosmetics applied to the cheeks for colour. Cordon rouge, like cordon Beu (Bleu is French for blue) refers to the cordon, which is a sash. You see it here worn diagonally. It is on both the bottle and the cap. Other Champagnes sold in the same supermarket were made from Chardonnay grapes. My husband prefers the fuller flavour of pinot noir. Most people are happy with a best selling cheaper wine. Useful Websites Author

My third bargain price dress from my hurried Holland Village shop is this soothing but lively blue. What can we learn from this picture? Photo by Trevor Sharot. This dress is one of three short knee length dresses with the same cut, which I bought in Holland Village, Singapore. I love palm trees and soothing sky blue makes a change from my usual colour scheme of vibrant, riotous reds and outrageous oranges. The blue sky is two shades of blue.  Numbering Photo I started numbering my pictures of clothes outfits since so many of them were called red dress or blue dress. I was having a hard time finding a previous picture on Facebook. I also wanted to be able to refer back to whether I had worn an outfit before. I had my first fifty in order, taking unworn and once unwanted items from the far end of the rail on the right and putting items which I had worn recently on the left. Soon, that system of sorting clothes changed to clothes co-ordinated by colour scheme. One black j...
