My third bargain price dress from my hurried Holland Village shop is this soothing but lively blue. What can we learn from this picture?
This dress is one of three short knee length dresses with the same cut, which I bought in Holland Village, Singapore. I love palm trees and soothing sky blue makes a change from my usual colour scheme of vibrant, riotous reds and outrageous oranges. The blue sky is two shades of blue.
Numbering Photo
I started numbering my pictures of clothes outfits since so many of them were called red dress or blue dress. I was having a hard time finding a previous picture on Facebook. I also wanted to be able to refer back to whether I had worn an outfit before. I had my first fifty in order, taking unworn and once unwanted items from the far end of the rail on the right and putting items which I had worn recently on the left.
Soon, that system of sorting clothes changed to clothes co-ordinated by colour scheme. One black jacket went with a black dress, a white dress, a black and white dress, and a red, white and black dress, so I hung them all together.
White Cape Blazer
The white cape blazer is almost as long as the dress. It creates a more formal look.
The jacket edges are shaped. I was tempted to use a metal bridge. However, I found that if you pulled the edges of the jacket together, the white completely obscured the joy of the palm tree pattern. So I pulled the jacket front apart in the photo.
Labels
The label is White Bird. White Bird is the label, presumably one of several labels or names for collections used by a company.
I used to wonder why a company would choose a different brand name. Surely, if you buy from Marks & Spencer, or Sainsbury's, or Primark, that label tells you enough. Then I found out why they change brand names.
Brands
The same company could have different labels for children's clothes, women's clothes, and men's clothes. Or, a budget range, and a premium brand. Or last year's clothes, and this year's clothes, with a new label for each year. Or two ranges by different designers, one plain, one sporty, one evening wear.
I found a Whitebird company online in Florida, but I that seems to be a different company. The words white and bird are run together.
That Dress
Later, when I undressed for bed, I decided to try on the dress the other way, with the back at the front. Since there are no darts, and the back is not longer, you can wear the dress facing either way. The neck is slightly higher at the back, which covers the back more elegantly. Worn that way, it leaves more room at the front to move your neck without a high neck in the way - unless you pull the front down. The pattern on the other side brings the top of the palm tree under the neck, which is more symmetrical. In theory, it draws more attention to the face. I usually prefer a pattern which draws attention to my face, after I have added lipstick and combed my hair and smiled brightly. However, if your figure is great, or you have not slept and look haggard, sometimes it is better to have a pattern or style which draws the viewer's attention elsewhere.
Brown Sandals
I don't like brown. However, at last I have a dress which has a secondary colour of brown which co-ordinates perfectly with the brown sandals.
Blue Hat
The blue hat was a slightly different colour to the dress. Who would have thought there were so many shades of blue! However, it matches the umbrella. I had some plain blue umbrellas. I chose the red to brighten up the picture and my mood.

Best Dress Colours
You don't need to do a Colour Me Beautiful course to find out a colour which suits you and a colour which doesn't. However, it is handy to reinforce what you know. And when I did such a course, of the six ladies around the table, four already knew at least one good colour, but not the others, and the last two ladies had no idea that some colours made them zing, whilst others had a deadening effect.
My best colour is rich royal blue, which accentuates the blue of my eyes. I recently realized that your eyes are like cloudy mirrors and change slightly to reflect the surrounding colours. The colour systems show you a complete colour chart of all the shades of each colour which suit you. So I am best not just with royal blue - which I was made to wear my mother throughout childhood, so I avoided it through my twenties
Red, vibrant red, suited me when I dyed my hair from mousy brown to blonde. I could suddenly wear red lipstick. Brown colour clothes no longer co-ordinated with my hair. The colour charts showed that emerald green, which I had never considered, was another new colour, so was deep yellow. Pastels were out.

From Shein, for only nine dollars, a short dress with short sleeves.
I have saved some of the catalogue pictures in my Pinterest site.
Summary - Tips
1 Check the fabric name on the label, also how the fabric feels.
2 Look at the length, or dimensions.
3 Compare prices of similar items in shops nearby.
4 Compare with better items at higher prices in the same shop.
5 A short dress or tunic can be made into a longer outfit with a petticoat or trousers (which Americans call pants).
