How to convert shorts into a skirt - lessons learned. Dress of the day 332.

I must confess this project did not go as well as I had hoped. First the good news. The project started well. Slitting the seams was straight forward. Some ends of the stitching were tough, well sewn. I had to admire the manufacturer for sewing down such thick fabric.  What size of sewing needle were they using! An industrial machine, no doubt. The thread and seams were very secure at the knee and crotch. No fear of your shorts pulling apart and sliding down.

Waist Size
More good news. Despite the shorts being too tight for my husband, the waist fitted me perfectly, no need to tighten nor loosen it, nor move the pretty button.

Horizontal Patterns
I rotated the resulting skirt, as you can see in this picture, to get the gaps at the sides instead of the back and the front. However, the result is that the pattern is slightly slanted.

I asked my husband what he thought. To my surprise he shrugged and said, "Nobody but you would notice (that the pattern wasn't matching or wasn't horizontal)."

Pockets
The front pockets on the shorts are semi-circular and good for resting your hands. The back pockets are small horizontal oblongs. If you turn the resulting skirt to get the slit hem at the side, you have one of each type of pocket on the front, and the back.

The pockets are at funny angles. If wanted to keep the short zip and fancy button on the right, which is better for me because I am right-handed. But then the curved pocket is on the right yet can only be accessed by the left hand reaching across your body to the right.

Again I asked my husband for his views. He was quite happy with the pockets being different, and only accessed by a hand going across the front.

I asked, "Does it look odd?"

He replied, "No, it's your pocket. It's up to you, whatever suits you."

Side Gaps

Gaps at the side are an acceptable style on the skirts of cheongsams. They are alluring, sexy. The slits are not just pretty, but also practical. Slits allow movement when walking, climbing stairs, and kneeling down.

When you are standing, the gap can be concealed by a fetching underskirt. I have hidden the skirt's side gap with a tote bag which I picked up for another reason.

But when you are seated, if the gap is between your legs at the front, if you sit with your knees apart, the look is not elegant. Worse still, you are in danger of pulling apart the seems.  You need a generous godet. (A godet is a triangular fabric insert.)

I wanted a green accessory. I picked up a green tote bag from a pile. Its pattern clashed with the skirt - but went really well with the garden greenery. I must use that tote bag again with a plain colour skirt.

Skirt Colours

Looking at the skirt, my first thought was, it is a green colour scheme. When I looked closer, I saw that the colours were:
1 White 2 Blue - pale blue and solid blue 3 Yellow 4 Pale lime green 5 Dark Green 6 A fine black line

So what are my conclusions?
1 Check horizontals in patterns
2 Add godets to gaps.
3 If at first you don't succeed, try, try, again.
4 Multiple colour patterns give multiple colour outfit options.
5 Tartan skirts don't go with embroidered petticoats.
