Red berries and green holly. Photo by Trevor Sharot.

The jumper has a black background. The pattern is red holly berries on green holly leaves, and red and white candy canes.

Xmas Symbols
I wondered, was this a Christian symbol and was it suitable for visiting family, friends, and business associates who might be Jewish, Moslem or Hindu?

American Striped Candy
I decided that striped red and white candy canes used to be American but have now reached the UK.
Candy canes, like British rock, are all solid sugar - and bad for your teeth, like ice cream. But in times of war (in Ukraine) and Covid worldwide, people are taking a short term view of life and enjoying pleasures now, although we are also health conscious and cautious.

Seasonal Symbols On Clothes? Green Holly
What about holly?  Holly does not lose its leaves in winter. It adds colour, the combination of red and green.

That was pagan. The early church tried to get rid of the winter symbols but failed. If you can't beat them, join them. So they said that the holly was a Christian symbol.

Colours As Symbols
Oh, dear. Whilst red roses might mean one thing and pink roses might mean another, and lions and eagles might be symbols of one country or another, I don't think animals and plants and colours or even shapes should be a monopoly of a group or religion.

Angels
A fictional figure, such as an angel with wings might be considered religious. But at some point angels and Xmas trees and Red Santa Claus have to be considered simply as season figures. In addition, in a multi-cultural society we are embracing all religions so long as they are not harming others.

Mistletoe and kissing
Kissing under mistletoe was once a custom. With Covid, kissing and mistletoe were banned. Having got out of the habit of kissing strangers and even family and friends, we can bring back the mistletoe.

Green trees
What about green trees as a symbol of Xmas? Now that we have had white trees and blue trees and pink trees, I think we can stop worrying about a tree being exclusively Christian. No need to worry about whether you are offending anybody. All colours and symbols welcome.

Snowflake Scarf & Matching Gloves
The snowflake scarf and matching gloves were bought from St Lukes charity shop in London. The packaging says Debenhams.com
The etched out snowflake pattern is on the gloves and one side of the scarf.
