The Caftan Dress

I had an old, loose, black caftan. I wore it only when in a hurry, because it was loose,shapeless, and a dull colour. However, today, I transformed it. I tarted it up with a white collar and fancy sleeves with bows. The new look was smart and suitable for Zoom, and for a family dinner time in the evening. 

Caftans are almost always loose. An extra attraction of this design is two large open-top, oblong patch pockets, which makes the caftan comfortable to wear. Somewhere to put your hands. I like pockets. Empty pockets. Just for my hands.

The label says, Batik. Kereta Kencana. Made in Indonesia.

Kereta is Indonesia and Malay for train, or car, or train car. Kencana means golden.So it translates as golden car, or golden train, or golden carriage.

The symbol is a crown with five triangular points each topped by a  round disc or ball.

The dress pattern is blue with orange. An alternative colour scheme would be blue accessories, or orange. Black shoes would look very neat and smart. White would add a fresh, lighter effect. Orange would add warmth. 

White Dickeys

Dickeys are collars which look like you have a shirt on. Dickeys have various uses. 

1 Reduce Washing 

Firstly to enable you to wash the collar every day and put on a clean one, with less washing than a whole shirt. They were handy in the days before washing machines were universal.

2 It is cheaper to buy a collar than a whole shirt.

4 When travelling, you can create different looks with two or three different dickeys. For example, including going from casual to office wear and from casual day to elegant evening. 

The dickeys come from China and you can order them through ebay. Many designs at assorted prices.

You can be lots of caftans on Shopee and Shein in black or red or other colour backgrounds.

White Sleeves

The white sleeves are attached to a short white bodice. It has eight large hooks and eyes down the front. The brand is Pretty Little Thing. Size  UK 8.

Straw Hat

The straw hat has a handy deep brim like a baseball cap.

What is this? My repair.  I have a lovely shiny, smart black slip, from Marks & Spencers. It has a slit with pretty lace edging.  But it is slightly tight. Blue H & M Dress, dress of the day 393

But I had a white blouse, so I wore this. On the internet and on Facebook you can see lots of videos of how to tie a scarf, but mine is simply hanging, which partly obscures the cleavage.  Cleavage cover I had a choice. To insert a dickey or false front, also called a removable or detachable collar. I have one or two which are plain white.  The alternative which saves hunting for a matching dickey without distracting collar colours and embrodiery, is simply to add a fastening. I decided that a snap or press stud fastener in small size is qhich to fasten and unlikely to pull apart (as opposed to hook and eye. Period pants from Savida. Pants, UK. In the USA they would be called underpants. They come in two colours, black or dark blue with a mottled effect. They are triple layer. Could be useful for hiking and travelling. Or when you have a cough.  A pack of three full briefs for fifteen pounds. I then googled period pants and found lots of results.  Marks Marks & Spencer do a pack of three containing three different colours, black, white and pink, for sixteen pounds.  They also do different absorbencies. The options range though light, heavy, and extra heavy. And more styles, such as pantaloon style, like short tight shorts coming half way down your thighs.
