Adding A Security Pocket - What To Look For Post 357

I wanted pockets on my new read dress from Shein.  I could not do a concealed zip up pocket. The side seams are securely sewn. Too secure for me to add a belt or pocket.

Cutting curves is not my thing, unless a saucer is the right size to make a template.

How about buying a ready-made pocket? Or half a dozen wholesale, multi-buy?

Price\

I found a 'security pocket; on Amazon. It costs 3.97 pounds - free postage if you have Amazon prime.

Security

The security seems to be a zip. Maybe more. How the zip fastens.

Iron On

I read through all the comments. Most sewers, don't trust iron-on items.

Nor do I. I have had the sticky back detach in the past, either from washing the garment, or just out of spite!

One person complained that the iron on part was the wrong side of the pocket. But most people were sewing, instead of ironing on, not in addition to ironing on.

Firm Fabric

People pointed out that trouser pockets are often of thinner material. Yes, you don't want bulky pockets inside trousers, rubbing you, as well as looking obvious. And wearing out when you put sharp edged items such as pencils, or toothpicks, or heavy items such as phones.

I shall keep looking.

You tube videos tend to show sewing pockets with a sewing machine.

You can take an existing garment to work out how deep your pockets need to be. Or take a passport or phone and allow a gap around it plus a seam allowance, and space for a hankie (paper tissue) or lipstick or purse. Or notebook and small pen.

Alternatively find a cross body bag in a matching or contrasting colour.  Or suspend a zipped light make up bag. make it co-ordinate by edging with a strip which you sew onto a large safety pin or brooch. Or add a headband or scarf or bandanna, and cut the end to make a hanging pocket. Hang from two vertical piece of ribbon sewn in at waist level.

You can find diagrams of pockets on Wikipedia and Wikipedia Commons.

Wikihow explains with diagrams.

You tube has video demonstrations.
