A closer eye on eyelet dresses (Broderie anglaise) to buy and tops to buy, post 380b

Image
Some of these apparent dresses are just long tops. That is okay, if you want to wear them over long skirts of a dark colour. Look at the sizing charts to see the length. Some of them are not eyelet all the way around but have a plain white back. Admittedly the sleeves show the eyelet fabric all the way around. On March 17th I wrote about my friend's red eyelet dress from Thailand, which I admired. A week or two we met again and she was wearing a white eyelet dress. This time she said she had bought it in Singapore and it was a Singapore brand and she would take me to the shop which sold it, The Stage Walk in Junction 8 at Bishan.  Selfie photo by Angela Lansbury. Maid Marion Makes All Green With Envy of the Bargain Brolly in green Pattern. Dress 377. Bargain Brollies.

Image
Angela in all green outfit, dress 303. Photo by Trevor Sharot Brolly is British English for umbrella. Green Skirt The skirt is actually an underskirt, for sarees, ordered from India. Heavy cotton with a drawstring of multi-plaited white rough string. Small pleats are around the hem. I ordered this style in two shades of green. Through ebay. You can see the petticoat with a different top, a totally different effect, in dress 340 with a greeny blue top.  Price just under ten Singapore dollars, about twice the cost of the similar underskirts from Mustaf Centre in Singapore, where the current price (April 2022) is about 4.95 Singapore dollars. The Straight Neck tie The straight edged neck tie in green was cut off the hem of a dress which was too long. The hem was getting caught under my shoes' toes as I walked. And dragging on the ground getting dirty. After I shortened, I had the bonus strip of green fabric to match the dress as a belt, or other green outfits. The Green Umbrell...

How To Match A Multicolour Top With A New Green bargain umbrella, dress of the day 376

Image
This close-up selfie shows the colours of my top more clearly. Although I have several colours, and in combination look bright, on close-up the colours appear muted and hard to match.  Green Umbrella. Photo by Trevor Sharot.  First Secret of the Top - Mystery 'Cotton' The multi-colour top has a label saying it is 100% cotton. I love cotton. Cool. Comfortable. Yet it is stretchy.  Made in China. I wondered whether they sought to mislead or confuse the buyer. Or the shopkeeper. Or whether the person sewing on the label has poor English and muddles the labels. Or does the person writing the label not understand? Or in such a hurry that they got the wrong label. Or is their dictionary wrong? Since I cannot find a brand I shall never know. Secret Pockets and Second Pockets In addition to the confusing cotton label, two good points. The pockets. Two small pockets.  I love having pockets. I like to have two pockets, not just one. Hurray for a pocket, two hurrays for ...

Buy a bargain, or sell to Refash or ebay: variety, bundle, lot, mystery (Post 375b)

How To Buy From Refash  I came across a Refash an open top, walk in 'kiosk' (I can't think what else to call it) at Bishan. I bought two items, from well-known brands, Zalora and Love Bonita. That was not chance.  How to Buy From Rehash The Seller - Refash The seller is solely for second-hand clothes. They have 12 branches in Singapore. The Bishan branch is on the balcony overlooking the atrium in Junction 8, a multi-storey mall above Bishan MRT underground railway station. Bishan is a busy junction where two train lines meet. The blue downtown line, and the yellow Circle line. How to Sell to Rehash You can earn from 50 cents to 5 dollars by selling a garment to them. Minimum ten garments. Within 14 days they contact you with the price (which varies according to fabric and popularity). (You don't have to wait for the item to be sold.) If you want to sell second-hand items to them, you can read their information page for sellers. They look for brand names. The clothes co...

White lace dress, label Zalora. Dress of the day 375 in white complemented with black and red - Outfit 301.

Image
Angela Lansbury in white lace dress by Zalora. Photo by Trevor Sharot. Why Buy This White Lace Dress? At first glance this was not the fabric I wanted, the late was pretty, but not my target. Lace is lovely.  The size was small and it also looked tiny. Most small items I tried on got stuck on the shoulders.  But this had a long zip at the back. You can reverse the dress and just try the arms. If the sleeves are too tight, you either cut them off or let them out. But how do you try it on? These sleeves were wide, no problem.  So I tried on the dress. To my surprise it fitted. A close fit. A perfect fit. A flattering fit. Like hand in glove. Super Sleeves Aren't those shaped sleeves divine! You have to lift your arms to show off the sleeves to best advantage in a photo. I was looking for broderie anglaise, called eyelet in Asia. I already have a white lace dress with co-ordinating, almost matching lace white wrap which has fringes. However, this dress suits me well. ...

Toastmasters t-shirts and masks in 2022. Dress 373.

Image
Angela Lansbury wearing a black Toastmasters T shirt and matching black mask. Photo selfie by Angela Lansbury. To get the text the right way round, my husband edited the picture in Photoshop. District 80 is Singapore. The tee-shirt is size XL. It is light weight. The label says Made in China. 100% Polyester. What can I wear with it?  A black head band?  A white dickey collar to look professional? A black skirt would look neat but sombre and funereal and monotone. A white skirt. Something in the Toastmasters colours? Suggestions please. Useful Website toastmasters international shopping page Unavailable until May 8 2022. Available from May 9th. Clothing sizes - American, Australian, British, European, Italian, UK, USA

Image
UK/Australia size 10 - USA size 6 The UK and Australian sizes seem to be the same. American sizes are smaller. So are Asian sizes.    Sizing depends on brand. I can wear from US size 6 upwards, but even a 4 if the armholes are wide or the material is stretchy or the item is loose. It also depends on whether you want to wear a bra and vest underneath, and whether you need to fit a jacket on top. A friend of mine wants to give me some clothes and asked what size I wear. I gave her the measurements in inches and centimeters instead of sizes. It used to be the case that Asian sizes were too small for westerners. I have bought front closing bras. If I buy the biggest size they are so wide that the shoulders fall off and have to be shortened. But the bust is still too flat. In one instance I removed the shaped foam cup and considered replacing the pair of cups with others taken out of an old swimming costume, or even cutting up an old bras whose elastic fastener had 'gone' (m...
