Stripey Red & White Socks, thigh high, and tights - outfit 679 by Angela Lansbury

 


I bought a pair of knee high red and white stripe socks in St Luke's charity shop. At one pound or under, you can't lose much. (Their charity fundraising shops are in NW London in Hatch End, Harrow Weald and elsewhere.)

Why did I buy the long socks, in hard to match, garish, childish, stripes - after hesitation and consideration?

The Advantages Of Long Socks

The  length was attractive, at this time of year. I often need long socks under a midi skirt. For warmth in winter. And not to show bit of bare legs above socks. To co-ordinate colours.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Red and White Stripes

I like red. It's fun. White can show dirt quickly. 

Red and white is a bit restrictive. It will clash with patterns, only go with plain reds and whites. But under a table at dinner or on Zoom nobody else will notice. Nor will I. I will only feel them.

If the socks are too tight, you might feel uncomfortable. At night, when you take them off, you might see red indentation lines across the top. I tried folding the tops over. And adjusting the tops to different positions every couple of hours.

Tight Socks

Another advantage of the socks, if they are reasonably tight, but not over-tight, is that they act like compression socks. But normal socks cost much less than compression socks. 

When I got home and tried them on I was pleased. 

Snagged Socks - Take Care

I pulled them on and a toe nail got caught. This risked tearing the fabric. I cut and filed my toenails. 

I then put my socks on carefully. Put them over the the foot first. then pull them up. Instead of sliding the toenails down from the top of the socks. Lesson learned. More haste less speed.

Uniform - Buying Again

If I construct a co-ordinated outfit, I could speed up dressing every day. Red and white, plus in winter, black.  I could have a weekday or weekend outfit of a red or white blouse and black skirt.

 I would need to alternate two pairs of socks which I washed out overnight. Where did they come from and can I get more?

Survival Clothes and Kits For Holidays, Home & Away post 510

I read in the news today that the French have issued instructions on preparing a survival kit for householders.  Convenient Carry Bag Your house should have a bag you can carry, or sling in a car. Your handbag or tote bag or holdall should have a few essentials. When hiking I wear clothes with pockets and have a rucksack with have pockets water, food and sting relief, and insect repallent, and maps and phone numbers. I also put the hospital nubers in my phone. Survival Kit Everybody should have a survival kit by their door, as well as a first aid box in the bathroom and a burns kit in the kitchen. Also clothes! As you might expect  The St Luke's price was £3. I googled waistcoat, Shein, parrot, and the exact sme garment appeared immediately. The Shein model was wearing it over a white crop top with short denim shorts. The price was ten pounds plus three pounds postage. But as a new customer or returning customer (eg after a gap of several weeks not ordering) you might get offered free postage.  I like the fact that the patterns on the right and left mirror each other as if the parrots are about to speak to each other.
