Dress 176 Artistic Angela - in an Anthony Sicari dress and scarf.
VINTAGE ANTHONY SICARI DRESS & SCARF
Anthony Sicari outfits are vintage. What I like about Anthony Sicari outfits is that they are co-ordinated and usually have a scarf to match the skirt and top or dress which is very elegant and colourful. However you often see on ebay just a top, or the top and skirt without the scarf, which I presume has got separated over the years.
Most of the outfits are from the USA. Some are from people having a clear out, especially if they would rather wear the latest fashion. Other vintage outfits may be from people who are in their seventies who no longer need smart clothes, or have moved into a home, or their children are clearing out when parents are elderly or dead.
A few outfits come from second hand or charity shops. Americans call them thrift stores.
POSTAGE SAVINGS
If you live in the UK or Singapore the postage can cost as much as or more than the outfit. You might also have to pay import duty.
If you are on a budget in the USA you are in luck. Postage within the USA is often free. You can set your ebay settings to show only items with free postage. No surprises at the end of the transaction, no risk of bidding on something in a hurry and being committed to it despite the postage cost.
If nothing affordable appears, then look for a buyer open to offers.
If you want to make your own outfit like an Anthony Sicari outfit, the tops have asymmetrical shiny fabrics, the sleeves are batwing and fit you (one, me) even in the smaller sizes. If you buy extra fabric you can make a matching scarf or rosette, or cut oblongs of fabric to sew onto the top to match the skirt fabric.
If you just want to adapt an existing batwing top, make or match up a long skirt.
TO MAKE A MATCHING SCARF
If you are using a ready-made long skirt, you can cut a wide strip off the bottom to make a matching scarf.
POSING FOR A PHOTO
PROPS & COLOURS
I was looking around the room for something in matching colours and I saw the sketchbook. I also keep a pile of colourful hats, one red, one orange, one pink, one blue.
In another area I have my shoes. The black, white, silver and gold are in one section. The neutrals, cream, beige and brown are in another area. The bright colours, red, orange, pink, blue, green are in another area.
I also have spools of red, blue and green ribbon to make a hairband or hat band or belt.
If you have fresh flowers, or flowers in bloom, start with the prop instead of the outfit and wear something to match the plant(s).
POSE - POSITION
You can take a selfie of your face and shoulders with a mobile phone if you have an interesting hat, scarf, necklace or neckline.
SECURITY
Don't put expensive jewellery on show on Facebook and other media. Of turn on privacy for family only (and ask them not to share).
Firstly, you don't want to attract thieves. Secondly, your insurance company might refuse to pay out. This would apply to your engagement ring, vintage and expensive items.
In the old days you could keep them safely in a bank. Now that banks are charging, items are put in expensive supposedly secure deposit boxes or in safes at home. But the same caution applies.
When travelling, you can wear gloves to cover rings. Alternatively, put them on a chain around your neck, inside a high neck garment. I once took off a silver ring to wash my hands in a youth hostel in Paris. End of ring. Another option is a money belt around your waist.
I am always cautious about losing items, dropping them, items falling out, or being left behind at security. I once left my passport behind at security.
You can sew jewellery into a bra. This is not so good if you are going through a metal detector at security in an airport. However, it would work if you were travelling by bus or car.
DRAWING MATERIALS
PAPER
If you are sketching with a pencil any paper will do. However, a thicker paper allows you to rub out without making a hole in the paper.
If you are using watercolours, a thin paper will buckle when you apply water. The thicker, more absorbent paper is better. Look in a big stationery store or art shop for sketch paper or sketchbooks, or ask the assistant to help you find the right section or choose the right weight of paper.
SKETCHBOOK
The sketchbook is from Popular bookstore in Singapore, near Bugis MRT. You can also walk there from the central City Hall MRT. The Popular store is huge. It is on five floors. The artists' materials are at the top.
Faber-Castell 48 watercolour pencils, brush included, sharpener inside. Currently reduced. Keep an eye out for reductions. Sales of one or more lines occur frequently. Often there's a low table with trays of reduced items between the shelves. Occasionally a mixed pile. Usually one or two items on promotion.
