Secrets of Colour matching: Red brick Colour outfit: Dress of the day 226; Temt fringed jacket.

 


Rust Or Brick Red?
I was going to call this outfit, rust.   But rust sounds negative. 

I tried the combination brick red, which sounds warmer. The colour is warm, almost orange.

So I changed the outfit title to brick red. Brick red suits the history of London, as well as Singapore. London had the London brick company. Singapore used to have a major brick works and lots of little brick makers surrounding and supplying the main brick factory. 

Brick red is two words. But brick red is more accurate, makes me smile, so brick red it is.

The Lace Jacket with Fringes

I bought these two items together. I saw the jacket, with lace repeating pattern. I love lace. Secondly, I fall for fringes. The lace jacket has fringes on the short sleeves and fringes on the dipped hem. The jacket hem is more modern than my vintage lace items with straight hems. This jacket hem is curved and it rises at the front. 

(Of course, a straight hem is classic, timeless. Next year, this curved hem will be so last year. A lop-sided hem will be in. Or scalloped hem. Or jagged hem. Or a contrast colour fringe. Or a multicolour fringe. Or a longer fringe. Or a shorter fringe.)

Secrets of Colour Matching

How do you turn your wonderful new item into a colour co-ordinated outfit? Stay in the same shop to find a colour match. However, daylight and artificial light create different effects. If the shop has only artificial lighting, take both items to daylight to be sure they will match if you wear the items together in daylight. 

If all else fails, check if the items are returnable. If so, buy them. 

Take them out to the daylight. If anything looks wrong, photograph the items together in the daylight. Then take back the one you wish to change. 

You can also go into a nearby toilet to try on the item and be sure it fits. This precaution saves you a trip to return the item. 

It means you have the receipt handy. Make sure you pick up the receipt!

If all else fails, you could dye both items black.

The Matching Skirt

Anyway, the must-have skirt matched the jacket colour. That meant buying two garments. 

Temt's aim, stated on their website, is to provide affordable clothes for the twenties and thirties age group. 

The company aims to supply fast fashion, also known as on trend. Copying the latest ideas of the catwalk. (But not catwalk prices.)  The idea is that each season the customer buys something new, maybe selling the old one on Carousell.

If you buy only one item from a shop, you have to hope that you have a second matching item at home. If not, you have to come back, but if the shop won't hold an item in reserve, or you are busy, the matching garment could be gone tomorrow. I like to buy a complete matching outfit at one time.

Admittedly, if two items are affordable, the price of two is still twice the price of one. 

What's more, often the second garment is not a bargain. I hesitated.

However, it's easier to match up in the shop than carry your bargain item around looking for another matching bargain. I was still arguing with myself about the pros and cons as I walked to the cash desk to pay for both.

Miss Valley long skirt, labelled L for Large. The skirt has slits both sides from hem for walking. The non-opening buttons down the centre front are purely decorative. The waist tie ribbon hangs centrally from the elasticated waist. 

I looked at the skirt and wondered whether the buttons should be at the side, with the slits at the back and front. But the label on the waist, when placed at the back, as is usual, shows that the garment is designed with the buttons down the front. 

The washing label says Made in China. The washing label has a spare button. 

The White Top

The white top is a rescued item. I tried to match up a coral pink Patra silk top, but all one colour was too samey. The white provided contrast and brought out the red of both jacket and skirt and showed the fringes.

The top taught me something new. It has three white plastic push buttons on the right shoulder. The shoulder does not come completely apart. The shoulder  is sewn together on the arm side.  So it cannot fall off. 

The opening is just enough to pull it over your head. I would like a larger opening to prevent the neck catching on my spectacles. But an interesting idea to have a two thirds opening top shoulder on one side only.

The Sandals

The shiny orange fabric sandals are by Dolcissimo. Made in Italy. I cannot find the company online.

Words to search for: chunky heels, block heels. The soles are synthetic Vibram, added afterwards by the menders.

Stripey Red & White Socks, thigh high, and tights - outfit 679 by Angela Lansbury

  I bought a pair of knee high red and white stripe socks in St Luke's charity shop. At one pound or under, you can't lose much. (Their charity fundraising shops are in NW London in Hatch End, Harrow Weald and elsewhere.) Why did I buy the long socks, in hard to match, garish, childish, stripes - after hesitation and consideration? The Advantages Of Long Socks The  length was attractive, at this time of year.
