Traditional matzoh.

Matzoh can be used to make matzoh balls, a favourite dumpling in chicken soup and other soups.



I went to a Jewish New Year dinner. 

We were invited for 7.15. Was that for 7.15 prompt, or 7.15 for a much later start? We checked the times of dusk online.

We arrived early. The dining table was already laid with names showing where to sit. The weather was good enough for us to gather in the garden.

Mealtime Food

We started with the brief blessing over the wine. The wine was red kosher wine in small one shot glasses. If you have metal or dark glasses you cannot see the warming colour of the wine. 

The Wonderful Wine Dispenser

Our hosts had a gadget which dispenses wine to several glasses at once. The host grinned as he admitted, "If you don't line the glasses up right, each glass under the spout, the wine goes in between every one."

The food included home made chicken soup. We liked it so much that we asked for the recipe. The cook makes it with chicken wings. Fry the onions in olive oil. Add water, carrots, chicken wings. Cook the soup, like any soup, over an hour to extract the flavours. You can remove the chicken wings (after fifteen minutes or an hour?) to eat later with barbecue sauce. 

Add matzoh balls, made from matzos.  Matzos are crackers which you will see in many supermarkets in north west London and many more worldwide.

The word for blessed is baruch, the same as the name Baruch.

Stripey Red & White Socks, thigh high, and tights - outfit 679 by Angela Lansbury

  I bought a pair of knee high red and white stripe socks in St Luke's charity shop. At one pound or under, you can't lose much. (Their charity fundraising shops are in NW London in Hatch End, Harrow Weald and elsewhere.) Why did I buy the long socks, in hard to match, garish, childish, stripes - after hesitation and consideration? The Advantages Of Long Socks The  length was attractive, at this time of year. I often need long socks under a midi skirt. For warmth in winter. And not to show bit of bare legs above socks. To co-ordinate colours. Advantages and Disadvantages of Red and White Stripes I like red. It's fun. White can show dirt quickly.  Red and white is a bit restrictive. It will clash with patterns, only go with plain reds and whites. But under a table at dinner or on Zoom nobody else will notice. Nor will I. I will only feel them.
