Fun fascinator DIY from a placemat, plus half hats, and halo hats



What is a fascinator? 

A hat which fascinates. Sometimes with a bobbing feather. 

Often diagonal. Or off centre. I was trying not to say lop-sided or askew. 

A fasinator is not a whole head-covering hat, but a little attention-getting decoration on the top of the head. You anchor it with an anchor such as a stiff headband.

 it adds interest. And height. 

Colour

And colour. Or co-ordinating colour. 

Cost

A new one can be quite expensive. I bought one from Marks & Spencers. I though it was expensive for what it was. However, it was cheaper than any of the full size hats, most of which hid half my face, and covered my eyes, making it hard to see or be seen.

It is hard to find a fascinator to co-ordinate with an outfit. Unless you have it made when you have a dress made for the bride, mother of the bride or mother of the groom, or bridesmaid. 

I wore one as mother of the groom at our son's wedding in the UK. I had to use the only one available, which was red. From M & S. If I had had time, and thought about it, I would have cut a tiny piece of fabric from the hem of my blue dress. I would have stuck the blue, or sewn it it, in the middle of the decoration.

DIY Fascinator

An Australian mother made a fascinator from a place mat and a headband, with an added decorative flower from a children's craft box. She spent little, and won a prize of a box of chocolates.

I could easily find an unwanted place mat and a headband and a fabric flower.

But she fixed the folded place mat together with a glue gun. I imagine I could get the same effect with a few deft stitches. Perhaps instead of using cotton, I could use knitting wool or string or ribbon, ideally with a silver or gold fleck running though it. Plus a darning needle.

Cocktail Hat

A cocktail hat is worn in the evening. It has a bigger base, like a small upturned bowl.

Half Hat and Halo Effect

A half hat is what the name suggests. The halo effect is an arch which stands above the top of the crown of the head.


Audrey Hepburn in the film Roman Holiday wore a half hat with a halo effect.

Stripey Red & White Socks, thigh high, and tights - outfit 679 by Angela Lansbury

  I bought a pair of knee high red and white stripe socks in St Luke's charity shop. At one pound or under, you can't lose much. (Their charity fundraising shops are in NW London in Hatch End, Harrow Weald and elsewhere.) Why did I buy the long socks, in hard to match, garish, childish, stripes - after hesitation and consideration? The Advantages Of Long Socks The  length was attractive, at this time of year. I often need long socks under a midi skirt. For warmth in winter. And not to show bit of bare legs above socks. To co-ordinate colours.
