Hand Washing Clothes Could Damage Fingernails. What's the cure - and Prevention?

 I hand wash a lot of clothes - then I have intermittent trouble with my nails. Last week I had washed a lot of clothes, using bleach. My nails started to irritate. 

By the end of the day the whites at the top of my nails were forming arches down the sides of my nails which were coming away from my fingers. 

Nail Problem Causes

Now I knew what was causing my problem. Letting the bleach get to my skin, maybe. But also I was putting my hands in water too much. First swimming daily. Secondly, washing up by hand in Singapore. (In the UK I can use a dishwasher.) Thirdly, hand washing clothes.

Firstly, Prevention

I have several solutions, ways to prevent this happening again. 

1 Put all clothes in the machine on a low wash. 

2 Plumb in a dishwasher.

3 Wear gloves when washing dishes.

4 Wear gloves when washing clothes.

The last two are the easiest, cheapest, quickest.

Secondly, The Cure

Finally, the cure. I already have a box of medicated nail lacquer.

 It is expensive. So, I carefully save what is left over. 

After applying it, I still have to take care. I must avoid washing clothes. Also avoid washing dishes too long. 

Next, observe when the anti--problem protective varnish is wearing off. I note in my diary, and when to reapply the varnish.

I note in an Excel spreadsheet when I need to re-apply the protective varnish to my nails.

I could set an alarm in my mobile phone for re-applying the varnish.

Consider the Cost

It costs money to buy disposable gloves. It takes time to wear them. It costs money to plumb in a dishwasher. It costs money to send clothes to a laundry.

But make a comparison. Consider the cost of buying the nail problem cure, or visiting the doctor to get it prescribed on the NHA in the UK. But if this cost is balanced against or offset against the alternatives, and the aggravation of not being able to wear coloured nail varnish, you may think differently. Prevention is better than cure.

Alas, less hand washing of clothes.

I tried to remember the name of the product when asking for it in Mustapha's department store in Singapore. I got directed by an assistant to nail varnish. So next time I went back with the box. I tried to remember the name, with the words amoral and fine.

Then I looked up the product brand name in Wikipedia and was surprised and alarmed to read that it is derived from the word for morphine. At least I am now better able to remember it and spell it. A - MOR - ol - fine. Not fine as in fine. But feen as in morphine.

Stripey Red & White Socks, thigh high, and tights - outfit 679 by Angela Lansbury

  I bought a pair of knee high red and white stripe socks in St Luke's charity shop. At one pound or under, you can't lose much. (Their charity fundraising shops are in NW London in Hatch End, Harrow Weald and elsewhere.) Why did I buy the long socks, in hard to match, garish, childish, stripes - after hesitation and consideration? The Advantages Of Long Socks The  length was attractive, at this time of year. I often need long socks under a midi skirt. For warmth in winter. And not to show bit of bare legs above socks. To co-ordinate colours.
