Rainbow Gloves  Gloves in rainbow colours were displayed In Northwick Park hospital in a shop alongside Costa on the fourth floor.  The price was only 1 pound ninety nine pence, a penny under two pounds. About five different varieies of colour. I held them against my blue jacket and against my rainbow-coloured socks. Oddly, the bright blue wrist rainbow which I liked the most went least well, co-ordinated least and looked not outlandish but too vivid, distracting. I reluctantly put them aside.  I tried to reduce the other four pairs to one. Then I considred the total price, if I bought two, three...

Wear white at night, post 284

Image
If you are buying hats and scarves and have a choice, choose white rahter than black or dark colours. If you are deciding what to wear and you are walking or might end up walking, wear white. Especially when the night are dark.  That wasy drivers can see you more easily. More quickly. Safety first. I found that caps and beanie hats kept slipping off. They would get dirty on the floor. I would lose them. I would find them a nuisance and stuff them in a bag or big pocket. Than I would not be able to find them in a hurry. I would go without. I would get cold. I would not be protected by the white colour. I sewed a matching white scarf onto the white hat. A white bonnet proved just right. It framed my face. Kept my ears warm. stopped my hat falling off my head and getting lost. The combination was bigger, easier to find and harder to leave behind and lose.  Black is funeral. White is fun, a contrast with red and other colours. Brightens the face.  Please share links to...

Outfit 283 hat and scarf Billabong brand

Image
I sewed three scarves and hats together in one evening. This match up of a scarf and hat was the most challenging. My first decision was whether to show the brand name, Billabong, which I found rather amusing, and wear the black side outside. Alternatively, choose the green side out. The almost luminous lime would be less conventional than black, more striking, different to my other outfits, different to everybody else's outfits  I wondered whether a black hat was easier to match up with coats and macs and jackets in black..  However, I stuck to my principle of having light colours at night for safety. The theory of wearing white was backed up by experience as a car pasenger. My husband and I had driven around London in winter after dark and several times had what seemed like near misses when a dark shadow suddenly crossed the road, from under black trees, apparently out of nowhere. Did I till want the conveience of match everythign black which doesn't show the dirt? De...

Safety first, Light shade of green scarf, chosen to sew onto a dark navy and blue knitted cap, Post 282

Image
Light or Dark Colour? I wanted a warm scarf to sew onto my boring dark bllue, plain blue knitted cap hat. I could sew on any scarf. I had several scarves and several hats. Which colour scarf should I add to the dark, navy hat? A dark blue scarf matched best.  Bright White For Safety However, I wanted to wear something jolly in the daytime.  Additionally, more importantly, I needed something for safety, a colour which could be seen at night by a driver if I were crossing a road on foot. That mean adding a lighter colour scarf. Safety first. Wear white at night goes the safety motto. Next best, a light colour Pleasing Colours The blue slightly matches my blue eyes. The green goes well with my blonde hair. Sotthing yet lively.

Beanie hats, how to secure them, post 281

Image
My husband bought a beanie hat. it was expensive. it cost 25 dollars in galeries Lafayette in Beziers France, on holiday. In two days he had lost it. My beanie hats keep sliding off my head. that is a nuisance. I am constantly picking them up off the floor.  What can you do? Elastic and Ribbons Sew on elastic. Sew on two ribbons to tie. behind your hair at the nape of the neck. Buy hat elastic. Where from? Look in a shop such as the notions department in a department store such as John Lewis in London. Check out Spotlaight in Singapore, DAISO worldwide. Scarves Sew on a scarf. to look right it should ith match in colour, or fabric, ideally both. If you cannot co-ordinate complementary colours, add a constrast. Black and white. Or match your socks o shoes or jacket. Or your hair colour or eye colour. Or lipstick. Of bag and belt. I sewed a green scarf onto a rainbow scarf. The green scarf label is Made in Italy. United colors of Benetton.  I think I bought it when there w...

Beautiful Bow Tie 7 A Bottle Of Wine, Outfit of the night, 280

Image
Peter in his bow tie with a bottle at a wine tasting. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Bow Tie What are the advantages of a bow tie? Some come ready tied with a clip at the back. Easy and quick. No time lost tying your tie.  Nothing hanging down to get in your soup. Nouthing to drop drips on and stain. Ultra smart. One up on all the other men. Can be matched to your waistcoat. Or your hair. Or eyes. Brown, black, or blue. Horizontal rahter than vertical.  Draws attention to your face. Draws attention down, away from a bald head. The Bottle Makes you look more like a reader of labels than a drinker of wines. More intelectual than drunk.  Black is for orchestras. Colours such as palin purples are for ushers at weddings. Read and patterns are fun for comedians and clients at events. A colourful tie, or or one at an angle, makes you look simultaneously smartly dressed and fun to be with. Red hat and rainbow scarf sewn together, outfit 279

Image
Angela in red hat sewn onto scarf. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright. I bought a red knitted hat from North Harrow Library. The cost was wo pounds.  I liked the colour.  It was lightweight. It covered my ears, but not my neck.  I have a smart, warm red coat, but no hood. A bucket hat slides off, at least off my silky hair.  What should I do? I should do waht I have done before, add a scarf. A scarf tied on top looks untidy and keeps coming off. The useful thing to do is to dwe the scarf onto the hat. I looked in my winter scarf and glove compartment and found a red scarf. Soft. A bit dark. i found another red scarf, lighter, but not right. Then I found a rainbow scaarf. Very jolly. Brighter red. Will go with red as well as other colours. It was surpridingly easy to sew it on. I started from the back seam of the hat. I folded the scarf in two to find the mid point. A few minutes later, done, voila! (A French exclamation. I have just noticed it is short for see-there...

Sew Nametapes On Hats, protect hats from loss, dress of the day 276

Image
Photo by Angela Lansbury. Bought Hat My husband bought a warm hat in Galeries Lafayette in Beziers, France. It was more expensive than we wanted to pay, about 25 or 35 Euros but a nice warm hat and the cheapest they had. The colour was Invisible black. Invisable on dark restaurant floors under banquettes. Invisible under the black seat of a hire car.  I had wanted him to buy a cheaper orange hat, but he liked the softer, warmer black. Lost Hat After two days, the new black hat disappeared. I still had my white hat with the scarf attached. Years ago I had sewn in a name label. You need a name and phone number. Now I shall put labels in the inside lid of my travelling suitcase for my next trip, with a sewing kit and reels of black and white cotton. As soon as we buy a hat or gloves or coat I shall add a label. That way, if we leave it behind, somebody might shout after us. Or chase after us. Or phone us using our hotel booking number.  Or reply, 'Yes we have it,' when we ...
