Dressed For Dinner

 A friend's daughter was self - harming. I found this very scary. Sad for her parents. Worrying. The mother assured me that self-harming, at least in this case, was not a full-blown suicide attempt, but a sign of desperation, to get out of a situation, in the person's mind, to right the balance after an argument or a jealousy expressed by somebody else. A bit like sacrificing a child in primitive people, in this case, sacrificing a bit of oneself. 

She went to hospital and had apparently recovered and came to dinner with us. I noticed she had a pretty lace covering over her forearm. 

Fingerless Long Lace Gloves

It wasn't until I looked at it a second time, and was about to ask her where she bought it, that I realised it was on one arm only. It has looked like a fashionable, attention-getter, like a one-shoulder dress. But it was just to cover the bandage on her wrist.

Better than a bare bandage. Less inviting comment. Less of a reminder to her. Totally invisible to complete strangers, especially anybody at a distance. Elegant.

I got to thinking about times when you want to conceal a bandage, or a wound, or a small sore.

Work Wear

If you are working in hospitality and cut yourself, you are obliged to cover the wound. Why? Firstly, to protect yourself. But not just to protect yourself, but to be sure no blood nor anything else touches the cusomers' food or plates. That is obligatory. A legal requirement. 

You can't assume that people will automatically cover blemishes. Some people are in a hurry, or don't even think about it. If they do think about it, they might think it doesn't matter.

Revealing Age Signs

Age spots can be ugly. They also give away your age. I met a man who was older than me, in a restaurant. He was handsome. The relationship stayed platonic. But I thought how attractive he was. From time to time, I wondered if I would ever meet him again, and hoped I would.

I did. About ten years later, I met him again. He was wearing a short-sleeved shirt. His brown age spots were visible. A sign of how time has passed. How long since I had last seen him. 

And his age. I must have made polite conversation about his work, his home, his family, their health, his health. But I no longer saw his as eligible, attractive.

Concealing Age Signs

I remember telling a relative of mine in Singapore to wear a long sleeved shirt despite the weather, when we were invited to dinner. 

People in their eighties and nineties often develop blotches, even bleeding skin. Psorasis. When invited to dinner, it is polite to cover up unsightly marks. 

You can transform yourself or any elderly person for a photo or an outing or a special occasion. Hats with brims to cover foreheads, long sleeves, long trousers, scarves and cravats around necks.

Allow time before travelling, to add accessories, add a jacket, tie, cravat, scarf, even change a shirt,  or blouse or dress. For a wedding, or even a dinner, you want everybody to look their smartest and best.

You might want to pack fingerless long lace gloves to add a touch of glamour to an evening outfit. Also as a quick way to transform a daytime outfit into something suitable for dinner.
