Some websites say that polkdots were not related to the popular polka dance music in Europe. Other websites say the word polka dot came from the clubs in America which danced the polka.

  • Popularity of Polkadots

At first polkadots were seen as cheap and cheerful. Children's wear. 

Polkadots became popular when worn by Disney's Minnie Mouse.  White on a red background. Warm colour, happy.

  • Elegant Polkadot Outfits

Classic white on black or black on white looks most elegant. 

But for fun you can get all sorts of backgrounds, different sizes, subtle or statement. Or a mix of sizes of dots on one fabric. Or a rainbow mix of colours.

Princess Diana wore a white back ground with pola dots. A plai black belt, shoes and bag in black completed the look. 

She had several dresses in different colours in polka dots. With matching hats. If you were making your own dress, or instructing a seamstress or designer, you could specify a matching hat or hairband.

Patch If you cn't find a match, you can buy a matching hairband in a plain colour. Or a paler or darker or different size dots.

 Or cut a small piece of an inside hem to stick or sew a square, circle, diamond or oblong or spial rose in the middle of a harband. Or on the side of a hatbnd. Or as a tassel on a handbag.

Or hanging from loops of two ear-rings.

Or a tassel on a handbag. Or clipped onto the centre front of two plain co-ordinating colour court shoes.

Famous Fans Of Polkadots - Kate Middleton,Julia Roberts

Kate Middleton has worn polka dot dresses. Said to be a tribute to Diana.

In the movie Pretty Woman, Julia Roberts wore a brown midi dress with white dots. She had a matching headband on her summery straw hat.

Temu website has a huge range of styles and colours in June 2025. Black with white dots. Navy blue. Or backgrounds of green, or yellow or burgundy.\I have saved a few to my Pinterest account.

  • Trousers / Pants Polkadot Patterns

In English, trousers, in American , pants. The ones I saw had wide ankles. For quickly putting on and taking off your boots or shoes or socks. For security before boarding planes. Entering a house. Entering a temple. Washing your feet. Wading through shallow water. Walking through pubbles. The beach.. Whatever.

  I bought a pair of knee high red and white stripe socks in St Luke's charity shop. At one pound or under, you can't lose much. (Their charity fundraising shops are in NW London in Hatch End, Harrow Weald and elsewhere.) Why did I buy the long socks, in hard to match, garish, childish, stripes - after hesitation and consideration? The Advantages Of Long Socks The  length was attractive, at this time of year. I often need long socks under a midi skirt. For warmth in winter. And not to show bit of bare legs above socks. To co-ordinate colours. Advantages and Disadvantages of Red and White Stripes I like red. It's fun. White can show dirt quickly.  Red and white is a bit restrictive. It will clash with patterns, only go with plain reds and whites. But under a table at dinner or on Zoom nobody else will notice. Nor will I. I will only feel them.
