 Increase in Insects

With global warming we are seeing mosquitos and biting insects more often in England and other parts of the world. My travels to overseas country, plus living in Spain, the USA and Singapore has tught me a lot about prevention, and cure.

Anti- Insect Clothes - Cautious Cover-up

Your first line of defence is to cover up as much as possible. 

My Japanese friend Yumi was playing golf in Singapore and Malaysia. She wore shorts and short sleeved tops. She went off the green after a golf ball which landed in long grass. 

She was bitten by a mosquito, and got dengue fever. She ended up in hospital. She thought she was going to die. I thought she wwas going to die. 

Fortunately, she recovered. But we both learned the lesson.

Insects - Lessons Learned

After that she was very careful to wear long sleeves and long trousers. In addition, one can wear long socks, hats with brims and neck covering. We both took care. Nothing was too much trouble. 

Now, my packing list for long holidays, short weekend trips, brief days and afternoons out, includes insect repellent. And anti-mosquito clothes.

Anti Insect And Anti Mosquito Apparel

You can buy shirts and jackets with fold up hoods in the collar. If the hoods are attached with a line of stitching, not just a couple of snap fasteners, you are more confident that the outfit is secure. You can't lose the hood. The joining area is well protected, sealed.

Nosiguard fabric is used in clothes sold by Craghoppers. I bought long-sleeved shirts. 

Anti Insect Accessories - Hats

In Australia I bought traditional cowboy hats with corks suspended. The corks kept hitting my face and were a nuisance.  You have to get hats the right size. 

What about parts of your body which are still exposed? Wrists - need double buttons so you can fasten as tight as possible.Hands need gloves and/or anti-insect sppray..

  Ankles need long socks. And/or anti-insect spray. 

Repellent - Lavender

Lavender is also said to repel mosquitos. I used to yo-yo between Singapore and London, before and after Covid. In London I would stock up on lavender cosmetics to take back to Singapore. Marks & Spencer stocked pefumed products in the UK and later in Singapore. But UK products were cheaper in the UK than in Singapore. A British lavender brand is Norfolk Lavender. 

I travel with lavender and lemon scented cosmetics and perfumes. As well as mosquito and insect repellent, anti-insect spray for hotel bedrooms, and sting relief.


Singapore Anti Mosquito Action

Singapore is fighting insects constantly. I remember the first time I saw white mist rising up outside my apartment block, condo. I thought it was a fire. I phoned down to reception to ask if they knew. They told me, "It is fogging, anti moquito. Shut your windows."

This happened every Friday. You would see the workers, with masks over their faces, waving machines left and right over the vegetation around the skyscraper's grounds. You could hear the noise. 

Now they are breeding mosquitos which are part of the fight against malaria and dengue fever.

Insect Inspections

In Singapore there are strict rules. If there is an outbreak of dengue fever, and people in your area are being hospitalised, inspector will coe around, looking for sources of standing water. That could be gutters, saucers under plant pots, even plastic bags lying around on balconies. Pails on balconies or in gardens could be filling up with rain water. Water from the rain in old unused boots. Toilets with lids left up.

Flower vases are banned in cemeteries.

For hiking trips, to Bulgaria, Cyprus, Italy, Madeira, Romania, Spain, I bought mosquito repellent clothing. It's quite expensive. I bought second hand on ebay.

Anti Mosquito Hat

An anti mosquito hat with a brim, neck protection, and face net was just under six pounds sterling on ebay.


Shirts And Dresses From Nosilife

Ebay has lots of clothes from Craghoppers, Nosilife. Long sleeved shirts with two breast pockets. A shapeless long sleeved 'walking dress' with a v neck. WWhat's the point of that? The mosquitos get in at the v neck. I suppose you can add a scarf.

Blue H & M Dress, dress of the day 393

But I had a white blouse, so I wore this. On the internet and on Facebook you can see lots of videos of how to tie a scarf, but mine is simply hanging, which partly obscures the cleavage.  Cleavage cover I had a choice. To insert a dickey or false front, also called a removable or detachable collar. I have one or two which are plain white.  The alternative which saves hunting for a matching dickey without distracting collar colours and embrodiery, is simply to add a fastening. I decided that a snap or press stud fastener in small size is qhich to fasten and unlikely to pull apart (as opposed to hook and eye. Survival Clothes and Kits For Holidays, Home & Away post 510

I read in the news today that the French have issued instructions on preparing a survival kit for householders.  Convenient Carry Bag Your house should have a bag you can carry, or sling in a car. Your handbag or tote bag or holdall should have a few essentials. When hiking I wear clothes with pockets and have a rucksack with have pockets water, food and sting relief, and insect repallent, and maps and phone numbers. I also put the hospital nubers in my phone. Survival Kit Everybody should have a survival kit by their door, as well as a first aid box in the bathroom and a burns kit in the kitchen. Also clothes! Japanese The Japanese are reputed to keep survival kit by the door. Why? In case of earthquakes. Travellers should have a first aid kit. In their suitcase or bag. And in cars. Plus spare clothes.
