I added a zip to a dressing gown from Debenhams.
Red Wrap From New Zealand
This dressing gown has the Label Intimo. From New Zealand. Maybe I bought it from a charity shop there when on holiday. It is 100 per cent polyester, so no bleach, no tumbling.
This red wrap-around dressing gown had been hanging up on the back of an over the door hanger in the shower room for goodness knows how many months. Others which are similar have been unworn for years. I don't wear wrap arounds. They look pretty. Light. But impractical. Untidy. Show too much leg to strangers if I have to answer the front door to a postal delivery. Flap open and trip me up. Chilly in winter and mid season. Reduce self-respect and status because they shout, I haven't been bothered to get dressed. Lop-sided. Lose the belt.
What a shame that lovely silky satin fabric garment did not come with a zip. But what if I decide to add a x#zip.
I looked at the price of zips. The price department stores charge for zips, especially the more expensive open ended zips, is more than an entire dress or dressing gown from a charity shop.
However, I eventually decided the red dressing gown was talking up space, on the hanger, and in my head. Time to order a zip online.
This week I got up early. What can I do that would be useful. Some non demanding job. Sew in a zip.
It is easy, I have done if several times before. You just sew in the two sides of the zip. Because the zip is open ended, you don't even have to sew down the end of the zip, except to fasten off the thread.
However, you do have some challenges and decisions.
Decisions About Zips Inserted In Wrap Garments
You do have to line up the hemline. And the waist. And the bust.
And decide whether you want the zip to go higher or lower.
Also decide if you want the zip on show, or concealed.
I sewed with a running stitch.
What could go wrong?
I sewed the
But a little bit tricky.
The British use the term zip. Americans say zipper.
I sewed in this zip by hand. I ordered an open ended zip, in red, to match the garment. Amazon, ebay, and Temu, all have open ended zips. I have three or four garments needing zips. I ordered one very long one, and two shorter ones to save money.
