Naming and Numbering Blogs and posts. Dress blog Post 690 by Angela Lansbury
How To Find Past Posts
When I started my dress blog I did not have numbers on the posts. When I reached about ten posts and a reader asked me about a red dress, I had trouble identifying the post. I did a mechanical search which showed that had several dresses which were red or partly red, plus text which mentioned a red dress or partly red outfit as an alternative to the blue dress pictured.
So I decided to number the posts. At the start that was quite easy. I headed the blog post, dress of the day one, two, and so on.
Changing Titles Of Blogs & Posts
However, I soon started writing about features which were not dresses. Trousers (Americans say pants). Hats. Night dresses. I tried various solutions. Dress of the Night. Outfit of the day. Hat of the day. And what about posts which were not about dress, but clothes companies, or labels, or sewing needles? I used the words post of the day.
Why Add Author Names To Titles?
I then added my own name. That way, if my post was photographed or copied, by a reader, another blogger, or myself at a later date, my name would appear in the title. Easy to tell if the post was mine.
Punctuation In Titles
My next challenge, choice, was one of punctuation. At the start I left the post number as a number to be succinct and not have too long a title.
Later I decided to add a comma. Then, instead of a comma, a full stop.
(Americans use the word period when the British use the word full stop. To the British, a period means monthly period of menstruation.)
Capitals Or Low Case Initial Letters In Titles?
If the title was too long, I could use capitals to start each word in the first part of the title. The second sentence about the number and author could have small initial letters, except for the first letter of the sentence and the first letters of my name.
I rejected the idea of having the entire title in caps. I also decided not to have the title in caps and the auth['fs name in a mixture of lower case and capitals.
The idea of numbering your creations in date order is not new to me. Musicians have done this for centuries.
Another system is to date the posts. The advantage of numbering is that you can identify early posts. You can also see how many posts you have written.
Adding The blog Title To Posts
After starting to number posts about clothes, I started numbering my poems. That is really useful as I might change the title of a poem. I have numbered posts on my other blogs. If I did a google search for Angela Lansbury and the blog post number I might find a post from the wrong blog. So I have started adding the word dress in front of blog. This makes the title longer, unwieldy. Short titles are more reader/user-friendly. However, as they say needs must.
