Unlabelled Vintage Skirt

This skirt is warm in winter, with a wonderful, cheerful, colourful pattern. Colourful yet subtle. It has a velvet effect with pink, and turquoise blue, stylised leaf and flower patterns, on a black background.

No label nor washing instructions. I don't usually remove labels.

When Do I Remove Labels?

Labels which are sewn only across the top can hang outside the garment, untidily.

I modify or remove labels if they are scratchy. Sharp edges to labels are caused by heat sealing labels. Then I would cut off the label edges. First I snap the corners. Still scratchy? I might have to cut along the edge. But that is untidy and frays the label. Is it easy to remove without damage?

Re-attaching labels

I don't want labels scratching my neck. Maybe pin or sew the label back on at the waist or half way down the hem, inconspicuously, but still on the garment for identification later. Why? To find matching garments, or different patterns in the same style. Also, in case I ever want to sell it, or let my executors know it is a designer label or well known chain such as Marks & Spencer in order to sell it. Who would want to do this? Whoever gets it after me. I am in my seventies. One day, far away, I hope, the garment will outlive me.

Small Size - Too Small To Wear?

The waist was ridiculously small. I could see it would not go over my hips, even with the short wait zip undone. So I pulled it over my head. I discovered it had a black lining, obviously even smaller. I pulled down the lining. Tried wriggling about. Eventually I had the garment with the waist under my arms. The skirt was so long that it was down to my mid-calf length, a hand width above my over the ankle boots. But still up under my arms and open at the back. It bulged slightly at the front. So maybe the zip should have been at the side. No centre back label to mark the back.

Was it worth altering? The hem was long. Easy to let down.

Side Slits In Skirts

The fashion in 2026 is for a slit up the right leg front, with an arch at the top. However, I think this looks suggestive, even for glamorous evening wear.

I prefer a side slit, in the style of a Chinese cheongsam. A long slide slit is less visible when somebody is facing you. The slit only opens as you move to enable you to climb stairs, walk.

In my case I discovered that getting into a car seat wearing a tight skirt, or out of the car seat, is awkward, time consuming. So my long term plan is to slit one side, or both, up to knee level. That way I still get warmth in winter. But ease of movement.

Blouse By Erfie

I love the styling of this blouse. The pointed collar and horizontal lines and smart, shiny buttons look, and fitted cut look business-like for any meeting where I want to appear professional.

The blouse label says Erfie Jeunesse 40. I have described this blouse and its hard-to-read label in previous posts.
