St Patrick's Day Cardigan

March 17th is St Patrick's Day, celebrated worldwide by people from the Republic of Ireland, Eire, and the North of Ireland, and by Irish people and their family, friends, colleagues and well-wishers. Restaurants, hotels and businesses and tourist boards enthusiastically join in, with decorations, dance displays, food and drink coloured green. Customers turn up at pubs in green clothes and accessories. Pubs worldwide sell hats, or give them away free to the high spenders or all customers. 

Clearance And Date of St Patrick's Day

In 2026 and for another few years St Patrick's day fall on a weekday so people celebrate with public parades on the weekend before and/or the weekend afterwards.

On March 17th 2026 I can see clearance offers on Amazon of dresses and cardigans.

Cardigan

Cardigan in the UK used to mean knitted top garments with long sleeves. A cardigan would button up over a short sleeved undergarment.

However, the word cardigan now seems to be extended to mean all kinds of jackets. They can be thin or thick, lined or unlined, any fabric. They have long or short sleeves. They are increasingly edge to edge, without buttons. 

Singapore Surprise

Years ago in Singapore in March I did not have time to go shopping in the department stores looking for seasonal items on St Patrick's day. Instead I guiltily went downstairs to the pool for a swim. You can imagine my delight when I discovered just what I needed in the small supermarket beside the pool.

I bought Flipflops with the Irish theme to use during a seasonally themed Toastmasters International speakers' club.

Amazon Affordable Alternatives

Search for Shamrock slippers on Amazon and you will find a selection, cheaper than the ones on Etsy, but more basic. 

Shein Shoes

Shein also has reasonably priced green flip flops with large green foliage motifs, if you want to co-ordinate the green colour and don't need a specifically shamrock or clover shape.

Etsy Clothes

Etsy had two offers of white socks with green shamrocks. 

Tee shirts - a choice. Simple elegant designs, and humorous questions. 

Etsy Decor

Decor items included welcome signs, and Irish welcome,

Doormats were decorated with symbols or greetings or both. 

Hangings for indoors included the Irish greeting of a thousand welcomes, 

Outdoors, you could have wooden signs specifically for St Patrick's Day, or for all year, on your front door.

Multi-colour Oasis Trading Indian skirt, and Marks & Spencer Black Jacket, dress of the day 528

  The Marks & Spencer Jacket I bougtht the jacket because I wanted a long open ended zip to go on a long wrap around dressing gown without the garment gapping. I bought in a hurry. Only one pound. When I got it home I noticed it had a hood. My first thought was, that's handy, I've been looking online for hoods to add to some jackets and coats. I thought the jacket looked small.  In fact, when I tried it on it hugged me tight like underwear. This was good. It felt like a corset. The tight jacket worn over the too-long skirt, it helped keep the skirt up so that I didn't trip over it. However, my idea of cutting up the jacket went when I saw the label. Marks & Spencer. That's a brand I trust. Properly finished seams. No loose ends. Although one of a multi-pack set of underwear, the waist cotton pulled out.) But outer garments are always strongly made. Pearl brooches on hat paired with M & S sweater with pearls. Dress Post 686 by Angela Lansbury

    Sweater embroidered with mock pearls matches my hat pinned with mock pearl brooches.  I had never worn this pale grey sweater  I thought pale grey was a boring colour and always opted for something brighter such as royal blue or bight red. However, as I re-folded warm winter tops to fit them into my crammed dresser unit shelves, this fell out. Was the universe sending me a message?  I thought, I don't remember ever wearing it.  I must wear it once. Just for a change.  Snow is falling outside in London. Now is its hour. I looked  at the decoration. Sequins! I had been searching for sequins to wear at New Year. This thick sweater would not match my red solid sequin evening skirt. However, it would match my knitted hat, which bore brooches with mock pearls. The Grey Marl Sweater M & S Collection.
