Tesco Beanie hat and scarf sewn together. Dress of the day 750 by Angela Lansbury.
Shop Selling Scarves, Hats & Gloves
I bought the hat, and the scarf, sold separately, from St Luke's. The series of shops raises money for hospices.
Cost of the Hat and Matching Scarf
The items both cost £1, so £2 for the pair.
The Label - F and F
I found the scarf first and quite liked the pale pastel rainbow. It might match raincoats or jackets in both pale pink and pale blue. It would also add jollity to black or white.
But I usually go for brighter colours. Besides, the tassels were a bit bedraggled. The scarf had no label. I hesitated. Where was it from?
Then I saw the matching beanie hat. Hurray. A set!
What's more, the hat had a label. The heading of the top of the double layer label inside the hat said F & F. Who was that? A supermarket, I was sure. Which one? Not Sainsbury.
I recently realised that the manufacturer or seller puts their company name and address at the end of the label. Way down, beyond the ten language instructions on how to wash it. Yes. On the end of the second label was the answer. Tesco.
Why Sew a hat and scarf together?
Sewing keeps them together, so you can find them at home. Stops you losing the hat. The longer, larger, scarf is an anchor and can be threaded inside the sleeve of a coat.
If you get hot hiking, you can take off the hat and tie the scarf around your waist.
The scarf looks neat sewn centrally. That is best when the scarf hangs loose. No risk of the scarf slipping making one side longer. Nor slipping and falling off.
Another option would be to tie it and make longer the side which folds over. The same way that you tie a necktie. That method works well if you want to have both ends hanging in the same place when the scarf is tied. Also if you want one end thrown over your shoulder.
Best of all keeps the nape of your neck warm.
Matching Sewing Thread
I have darning thread in my sewing box, which came with contents, bought in New Zealand. The Darning thread went through a large size needle. I needed to use a threader with a diamond shape wire.
An alternative is to use knitting wool. Failing that, you could just use a cotton thread, double for extra strength, threaded through so it is concealed.
Buying Matching Sets
I look for matching sets of hats and scarves, or a hat and scarf combined.
Why Buy White?
I prefer white. Although you may need to wash it every now and then, it goes with most colours. The main reason is for safety when crossing roads as a pedestrian, following the safety motto, Wear White At Night.
I am now inspired to sew together other sets of hats and scarves. I have several which came separately, and am matching the hats with similarly coloured scarves.
