How to shorten an embroidered or beaded skirt

You have a choice of methods.

1 Make an inside pleat half way up the skirt, above the part you wish to save and display.

2 Remove the waistband. Cut out a section under the waistband. Re-attach the waistband.

3 Make scallops with a series of vertical cuts at six inch intervals and raise the cut sections with ribbons or elastic.

4 Slit both side seams. tighten the cuts with ribbons or elastic.

5 Insert doughnut shaped plastic rings on both sides of the skirt and pull through fabric to create scallops or U-shape folds.

6 If you cannot cope with changing the waistband, cut off the lower half of the skirt and sew it onto a matching or contrasting slip. Use the top half for a collar or shawl.

5 Add two  vertical straps or ribbons to hoist up the skirt and make it into a dress. If necessary remove any zip or pocket which makes it hang lopsidedly or too thick. Wear a matching jacket to hide the top part.
