Primark small top's cut is sewn. Post 865 by Angela Lansbury.
Primark top. DIY cut up the back is sewn. Photo by Angela Lansbury.
As you can see from the previous post, I had to cut the back of a top which was much too small. Not merely uncomfortable to wear. Almost impossible to pull on. Then another struggle to pull it off. I had put it aside. Then I thought, no, I have never worn it and I won't waste my money. I must cut it and sew it it so it is wearable. I cut it up and wore it. The following day, no longer in a hurry, I sewed it up.
I folded each cut side twice to conceal the cut edge for aesthetics and to prevent it fraying.
I cut off the protruding parts of the wavy edge. If I were to cut a similar items again, I would cut more carefully. First turn inside out. Then fold the two shoulder seams together. Pin. Hold the waist seems together. Draw a vertical line with tailor's chalk(which rubs off without leaving a mark, unlike ordinary blackboard chalk.
I pin the edges down with safety pins. I don't use pins any more. I did it for two minutes and had immediately pricked the tip of a finger. I thought I am not going to risk doing that again, certainly not several times.
I have a thimble but it is a nuisance and I can't wear ten thimbles. A thimble gets in the way of holding the fabric.
I could add a ribbon each side to make a bow at the waist or across the shoulder. Not yet necessary.
Now I know it is always worthwhile buying a sale garment from Primark or elsewhere, even if it is too small, if I really like the colour or design or think the price makes it too good to miss.
