Sylvia's Van Gogh Outfits Post 540

Image
See post 526 about Sylvia's black and white outfit from Light in the box. The Van Gogh museum has a huge range of nifty socks. I liked the Sunflower socks, bright yellow. If you wear Crocs or sandals and feel that plain white or black socks make you look like a child in school uniform, then these sophisticated socks could be the answer to upgrade your outfit. The museum also sells sunglasses, silk scarves, and kimonos and clutch bags.  I found sunflower brooches and pendants. Bum bags. And a wheelie suitcase with a yellow sunflower pattern. Kimono from Van Gogh Museum. Sunflower umbrella just over 20 Euros. Samsonite four wheel spinner suitcase. Shein top with Black Shein trousers Post 539

Image
This dramatic top is from Shein. The sleeves are accentuated by everything else being plain black. The top itself has a black body and black cuffs. It is matched with black trousers and black shoes. The lady was a fellow visitor at the FHA show at Expo in Singapore. She was very pleased with her top. The trousers are also from Shein. She was not so keen on the trousers, but they complete her outfit. What makes the top so interesting is first the contrast in colours, but above all the dramatic, zig zig cut of the sleeves with the raised shoulders. The tight cuffs are neat. White crocs Post 538

Image
Shoes on the underground train, including Crocs on the left. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright. I admired these white Crocs on the train. I crept up close to check that they really were Crocs. They had the word CROCS embossed large. The real deal. Crocs are currently on offer. An advertisement for Crocs popped up on my Facebook page. Unfortunately, they only had their two low price offer of about 20 dollars on the colours yellow and orange. I already have a newish orange pair and an old yellow pair. I would never have bought white Crocs for fear that they would quickly get dirty. Of course, one of the advantages of Crocs is that you can wash them off quickly and easily. Even so, I hesitate to buy white shoes. They do look good. Add a white shoelace belt to a black skirt, and a red butterly top, and more butterflies - 537

Image
The skirt  I put on a long black skirt. An evening skirt. The top  It went with my jolly white, black and red butterfly patter top.  The belt But my skirt was too long. It was tripping me up in the dayime. Risking getting wet or dirty as I watered plants in pots.  Colours and styles of belts I looked for a black ribbon belt. But what came to hand was a long white shoelace. The shoelace had been rescued from a discarded pair of men's sneakers (or loafers, whatever you call them). I had, of course, washed the shoe laces. I tied the lace around my waist and pulled up the skirt. I rolled it down over the lace. I pulled the top down hiding the top of the skirt and the belt. I could complete the outfit with black or white or red butterly jewellery and a red or white or black tote bag from Shein. You can also print out a red butterfly, or photograph the pattern on your garment, and load up the photo to be printed on a tote bag or baseball cap, by a company such as vistaprin...

You wear it over one shoulder. Put the other sleeve around your waist. Fasten the sleeve end underneath itself with a large safety pin. Hey presto, a new outfit. If you like one bare shoulder. Dress Codes In Clubs And What To Wear For Sport, Outdoor Sports bars at the Tanglin Club, and at night

Image
Ah - dress codes. If you are wearing shorts after sports, a suitable place to stop for a cold drink is the outdoors Sports bar on the ground floor of the Tanglin Club sports centre. Across the road from the main house with the fancy restaurants with their dress codes. I have been going to the Tanglin for ages and never knew about this Sports bar. I knew about the upstairs indoor eating area. But not the outdoors one. You can wear your sports shorts and sports clothes in this bar next to the squash courts. Photo by Trevor Sharot. Just the place if you are a Singaporean used to tropical weather, or an Ozzzie who likes the outdoors and informal, casual clothing. Or a Brit who likes escaping from winter weather in the UK with year round summer clothing and outdoor dining and drinking. I see tables and dining chairs, high tables and bar stools with backs, a canopy, and green parasols and greenery. The Balut group's section of the club website refers to The Fireplace and The Wet Bar. Ov...

Is it lime or pistachio? Post 533

Image
Sofia in a sarong from Indonesia. Photo by Angela Lansbury.Copyright. I was taken by this lovely lime green sarong. Lovely colour. I call this colour lime. My husband thinks that lime is a darker green, and calls this pistachio. (See later post on the butterfly symbol.) Do you like butterflies? Do you like butterflies as a pattern on fabric and paper? The butterfly has been chosen as the new symbol of Costa Rica. I checked in Wikipedia for pictures and descriptions. Would you believe there are several sub-divisions of lime.  For example, lemon-lime.  See my dress 421 alongside a Renault Clio in the old colour. They seem to have dicontinues it. Where to put your handbag whilst eating, or washing your hands.531 post

Image
How to hang up a handbag. I recalled that in London at a restaurant with high bar stools, I could not reach my handbag which was far below - also on the fity floor, and vulnerable to being trodden on, or stolen. The staff showed me that they had installed hooks for handbags. I was sitting in Wine Connection in Telok Ayer, and thinking, what a pity they don't have hooks for handbags. They could attach them. Is there a suitable spot on the wooden cross board or legs. I looked under the table top and do my surprise and delight, there was a hook! I had not thought to ask. The staff had not thought to tell me. Now I am wondering whether this is a common feature of tables where diners have high bar stools. In future I shall look.  If there is none, I shall suggest to the staff that such hooks should be installed, and promoted as a service by the thoughtful staff and management. Fun Photos - How to Pose and Edit, post 530

Image
Looking back on your photos, it is easy to see how you can edit them. If you have unlimited time, you can fix your poses. Take one full length. One vertical and one horizontal.  Person Behind You If somebody is in the background, ask them to take a photo of you. That way you have a photographer and don't need a tripod and get the phone out of the picture. Plus of course you move the other person. If the other person is a friend, take a selfie with both of you first. Then one of each of you alone. Collecting Phone Numbers Ask for their phone number to send the photo. If they deliberately or accidentally take, your phone, you know where it has gone. You have your new friend's number if they rush off. Tidying Background and Surroundings How do you eliminate toilets and litter? You can take another close up just of your face and the wall behind you. Or blur the background. Of use an editing programme which draws a circle around you. Rest the camera on a surface such as next to a...

Who are the suppliers?' Faith replied, 'It's a poncho! I ordered it online from a place called Lolita Show. They sell Japanese clothes. I got mine from the Sweet Lolita section. Sofia's Sarong For the Swimming Pool, or beach, with beautiful butterflies from Indonesia, and beautiful big butterfly print from Shein

Image
A large scarf makes a swimming pool or beach sarong. You just tie a double knot. The fabric has to be strong enough not to tear, but thin enough to tie a double knot which will hold. A thin. strong cotton will do, or a large oblong sold as a sarong. Sofia in a sarong from Indonesia. Photo by Angela Lansbury.Copyright. I was taken by this lovely lime green sarong. The White Collar On The Black businesslike dress, dress of the day, 527

Image
Angela Lansbury wearing a white blouse under a round necked collarless dress. The White Blouse The blouse is by label Miss Unique. Embroidered Collar The embroidered collar makes it fancy. Not quite as businesslike as a plain white men's shirt collar.  Removable button-On Tie The blouse had a matching tie which fixes to the bop button of the white blouse. The tie is removable.  I removed the tie because it clashed with the pattern on the dress.  Collar Styles Styles you might recognize from their names are stand up collar, and turn down collar, and button down collar, and notched collar. The Black Dress The label is Batik Kereta Kencana, made in Indonesia. Kereta is the Malay and Indonesian languages word for car, coach or train. Kankana means bangle, or bracelet and Kancana is also an Indian girls first name. Kereta Kencana is agreeably and memorably alliterative. The black dress has two large square front pockets. The pattern in a black background, with a blue, w...

Sylvia's Dramatic Black & White Dress of the Day from Light in the box, dress 526

Kimono and Japanese wall hanging Dress of the day 525 - and similar effect short and long kimonos for you from Amazon, Ebay, Light in the box, and Shein

Image
I had a photo of myself with the red Japanese wall hanging. When I looked at the photo I could see that the lady in the picture was looking at my stomach. I needed to lift the wall hanging higher. I also wanted a Japanese outfit to complement the wall hanging. I had a kimono with a white background and red pattern. Just the thing. Angela wearing a red and white kimono and carrying a red Japanese wall hanging.  Photo by Trevor Sharot. See post 523 which shows the wall hanging lower down, how it enhances another red outfit with a butterfly theme blouse. Post 523 has a photo using a filter to add posterize and change the effect and add interest and colours. Please bookmark and share links to your favourite posts. On close up I could see that the patterns were fans and flowers. I could have chosen as my accessories either fans or flowers. How to turn a pillowcase into a top, Dress of the day 524

Image
Photo by Trevor Sharot. The Spare Pillowcase  I had a pillowcase lying around. It did not match anything else. I was about to fold it up with sheets, as I scanned my clothes for something new to wear. Why not wear it as a top? Was it large enough? It was long enough, but was it wide enough? I needed to try it on, over my head. Cutting? Could I do that without cutting it? Only as a front piece on a white tee-shirt. It was too big for that. Could I wear it over my head without cutting it?  No. It has a long slit which would do for the waist. I had to cut a short slit in the centre of a short side for the neck.  Where to Cut I made a small snip in the middle in order to insert the end of a pair or scissors. The Collar Pillowcase top, collar. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright. Pillowcase Brand Domus. Red butterfly blouse enhanced by red accessories, a red Japanese wall hanging, a red sash, hat and sandals, Dress of the Day 523

Image
Angela Lansbury adds a red wall hanging and accessories to enhance her red butterfly outfit. Photo by Trevor Sharot. Copyright.  I rescued a red Japanese wall hanging. Why? Because it new and free. Because it was clean and pristine. Because it was red. Because it had two handy rollers and an A hanging strap.  I wanted to save the money used to clear litter, and the space given to discarded items which clutter the earth and endanger animals. I was sorry for all the people who had worked to make the work of art. Above all the person who designed it, thinking their creation had created pleasure and would last forever. I also felt sorry for the seller. And the buyer, who thought it would be a welcome gift. Did they have buyer's remorse?  Back home, I looked at it. I could understand buyers' remorse. The lady in the portrait was rather sour faced, which made me sad.  So I took out a pen and gave her mouth a slight uplift. I was looking for something red to complement a re...

How to hide your camera or mobile phone when taking a selfie, post 522

Image
On my Samsung phone I have various editing options. I used to see the additions of stars and hearts and thought they were silly. Then I needed to cover my phone in a picture. I could have used a speech bubble and added text, but that might look odd over my stomach. I decided that inserting a heart was best.  You can experiment on a photo taken with your phone showing. Then add various shapes and colours to disguise the object you wish to hide. You might want to hide the phone or camera, hide another person, or litter, a calendar with the date which would make the picture look old later, an object of value for security.

Tube skirt or sarong from Indonesia instantly converted into a dress, Dress of the Day 521

Image
Angela in Cylinder skirt converted into a dress.  Outfit 521, Photo by Trevor Sharot.  The tube skirt or cylinder skirt was bought in Indonesia by my husband. On his return to Singapore he gave it to me as a birthday present, knowing I like clothes. The tube skirt design was a novelty. I wrote about it in my earlier post. I looked at how to convert it into a dress.  I pinned ribbons on the long top gap in two places, making a neck opening, and beside it it dropped two openings for my arms.  By chance, a couple of days later, I picked up a white blouse with short puff sleeves and a collar. What could I wear it with? A plain black skirt (or skirt of any colour). As I hunted for a black skirt, I passed the cylinder skirt.  I picked it up and put it on. The blouse collar solved the problem of how to shape the dress neck. Useful Websites Tube skirt
