Wine and grape pattern blouse with a red skirt, dress of the day 225

Image
Wine blouse with red skirt Angela Lansbury in grape pattern blouse with red skirt. Photo by Trevor Sharot. Blouse 100% polyester. Thin and almost see-through, which does not matter when you wear a jacket on top. Dries very fast, overnight. Made in the UK.  Skirt The red skirt is actually an underslip for women wearing sarees, bought from Mustafa's department store in Little India in Singapore. I have the same or similar in three or four colours, red, orange, green. They were selling several  colours and two or three different styles. All inexpensive. Similare ones can be bought online from India. Mustafa's also has a branch in India, which is where they started. To reach Mustafa's in Singapore, you can take the MRT underground railway to Little India on the blue Downtown line, or Farrer Park on the North East line. Nails, nice nails! Post 224. White camelia, symbol of Chanel.

Image
Nails with the white camelia, symbol of Chanel. Photo by Angela Lansbury. I thought the pink nails with the tiny sparkles looked like court shoes. Little black toes, with diamond edging. Chanel Flowers The nails with the all black bases have Chanel white flowers. The Chanel flower is a white camelia. It is on their bags and other items. Coco Chanel apparently put a real white camellia flower on her belt and liked it so much that she made an artificial flower the motif, the identifying motif, of her collection. Applying Nails Ang told me that she paid 58 Singapore dollars to have these gorgeous designs on her nails. It took about 3 hours.  She thought the price was affordable because it is a home business. The price was also good value because the nails last about 2 mon ths.  That sounds long-lasting to me. I used to have my nail painted professionally. They might last a week, maximum two weeks.  Once one of the nail chipped the next day. I phoned and asked if ...

Blue flowered silk caftan 223. Why wear it? Why wear it again?

Image
Angela in blue silk caftan with large flowers. Photo by Trevor Sharot. I thought, 'What shall I wear today?' I am trying to wear a new outfit every day. Why? For variety. I can afford to spend five dollars or pounds a week on something new, even if it is a pair of socks, or two or three pairs. I can often find something discarded at the dump. I can turn trousers(americans say pants) into a skirt. A new outfit. A use for something never worn. I can turn a child's dress into a collar or longer dickey. I can convert a pillow case into a top. I can turn a lined jacket inside out from the patterned outside to the plain inside. Why not buy or make more? I have run out of storage space. Better to find a new combination. But when I am called for breakfast, I need to dress in a hurry. Not messabout matching up tops and skirts. A pull-on tunic, dress or caftan is quicker.  Let's go back to one of my older dresses. This caftan is handy. I like it. I like the faric. I l...

Towelling dress or shower robe, dress of the day 222

Image
Angela Lansbury wearing a lilac colour towelling robe. Dress of the day 222. Photo by Trevor Sharot. This towelling dress is light, soft and comfortable. I highly recommend it. The edging is a diagonally stripped or indented or spiralled white strip. You know it is a sewn on strip because a small section of it is used to make a bow on the single pocket. I hunted online to see which colour it came in. I saw that this design came with a single pocket. Mine did not seem to have a pocket. I felt down it to see if there was one inside. Sure enough there was. With a bow. I was wearing my robe inside out! If you want to hide the pocket you can wear it inside out.  It does up with two heavy-duty, large white poppers. The Label The brand name is QZYAM. The rest of the label is all in Chinese. Wash at 40 degrees C. Do not iron. Useful Websites Lazada has numerous styles at prices around ten dollars, in several colours. Websites in Chinese for QZYAM include my lilac colour, pink, red. ...

Pull a lost cord through with this handy device. Post 220 on dress of the day with Angela

Have you ever lost the waist cord of shorts or swimming trunks. One side disappears inside the seam. It is just out of reach. Too far to grab with tweezers. If you use the search word cord you get curtain cords and all kinds of cords. The search word you need is threader. the first one I found was just over 7 dollars, plus postage. Van Gogh scarf, dress of the day 218

Image
Angela Lansbury wearing a Van Gogh scarf. Photo by Trevor Sharot. The Scarf My husband bought this for me from the Van Gogh exhibition in Jakarta, Indonesia. It came folded in a packet. So he just bought one with a bit of red. It is mostly dark blue. So I am wearing with white for contrast. A white blouse, but a black jacket, open sleeved to show the white blouse sleeve. I might remove the black jacket over dinner. I considered cuttint it to make a tunic dress. But, when I sid this, my husband objected to the idea of cutting it. Why? Not that he didn't trust me to be left with a wearable item. I don't think he wanted the fabric to remain pristine. He did not like the idea of cutting the Van Gogh design. I tired it under the neck at the front with a double knot. A brooch would have made a neater look. However, I am always wary of brooches leaving two tiny holes. You can buy lots of Van Gogh clothing and accessory items online. White blouse The white blouse is from Marks & ...

How To Sew In A Jolly, Open-Ended Zip In A Wrap Robe - hand Sewn - No Sewing Machine Needed, dress 615

Image
Buy an open ended zip the right colour to match or co-ordinate or contrast with your towelling wrap or dress. find the fixed point at the top or bottom of the area you need to join with the zip. Mark the top and bottom on both sides with safety pins or pins. Undo the zip. Cut thread as long as the zip, with some over. If that is too unweildy or the cotton in lumpy and likely to snag, use a shorter length. If the zip is short, to avoid re-threading and loose ends, cut thread longer than the zip. Sew down one side. Make sure the teeth are in the middle to meet the other half of the zip. Check the colour and size of stitches on both sides. I try to hide the stitches on the top/outside. Hide by using matching colour thread. Make the smallest stitches on the top or visible side. Oversew the start and end. You ight oversew at intervals. That way if you catch the thread or break it,you don't lose the entire line of thread in a long ladder. However, you don't want the stitching so ti...

How To Find A Reversible Skirt - Bright Green, dress of the day 614

Image
I was looking for a skirt to wear with my pink outfit. I saw my green broderie anglaise skirt. I tried it on.  I love the colour.  A new look. The front of the skirt is broderie anglaise (nowadays also called eyelet). However, the complicated pattern of the broderie anglise made the outfit too busy, clashing tih the pattern of the top and distracting.  As I pulled it off, I turned it inside out. Could I wear it that way?  Yes. Turning the skirt inside out worked well for me. Another look from the same garment.  I took a selfie by propping my phone up on a low table and setting the timer to ten seconds. I had it on reverse so I could also see myself. That gave me time to try various poses. because the phone was on a low table I had to lean forwards. It did not show my shoes. But all I wanted was enough of the green to show the green skirt. How To Turn harem trousers into a dress, dress of the day 612

Image
I showed my friend Carolyn how to cut trousers up the inside leg seam to convert them into a skirt, or tube dress. She used my method to convert three pairs of harem trousers which had voluminous legs and a lining, into twelve dresses.  How did she do that? Each leg made one off the shoulder dress. If you wanted both shoulders covered, you added a piece of matching or contrasting colour fabric to go over the other shoulder. If she paid twenty Singapore dollars for each pair of harem trousers, she got 12 outfits, five dollars each. She kept one of each colour for herself, six outfits. She gave the others to friends. Grateful and astonished friends. The pocket on the trousers can be used to make a cap sleeve, or to make the strap on the other shoulder. The shorter you are, the longer the dress is.  She cut off the waistband which linked the outside with the lining. Harem pants online, but won't necessarily have lining, are from 5 dollars to ten dollars, and Temu ads offere...

Chantelle Two Colour Bras To Add To A Wishlist, dress of the day 611

Image
My American friend Lianne recommended Chantelle bras. We were talking about wired bras and being stopped at security because your clothing set off alarms. She had trouble with her wired Chantelle bra. I said, I prefer to travel with wire-free bras for the 14 hour longhaul flights from Australia or Asia to Europe, and from the USA longhaul. She said she had travelled in a Chantelle bra. It was her new bra. It was expensive but she had bought it when it was on sale (on sale, not for sale, reduced price). She said,"Despite the wiring, it was so comfortable.'   I went online to look for Chantelle bras, a brand which was new to me. They seem to be sold in the USA primarily or only.  I thought the name sounded French. I was right. Their website says that the name Chantelle comes from the first name of the French woman who started the company. I had trouble identifying the bra which my friend liked. There were so many styles! I was interested only in bras with wide shoulde...

The Perfect Pink Zip To Convert A WrapAround Towelling Robe To The Dress 610

Image
Angela lansbury wearing a blue towelling robe with a red zip added. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright. My blue towelling robe was originally wrap-around. I sewed in a long red zip. I wanted to do the same with a pink wra around towelling robe. The Perfect pink zip, dress 607. Photo by Angela Lansbury. Copyright. I have a pink towelling wrap. I don't wear it often after a shower. I wear it mostly to go swimming. I wear it walking around the pool. Also through the building and going up in the lift. I am meeting other people who are dressed, some dressed for work, some formally dressed for work, so I don't want to be in a flapping wrap. I had already sewn a red zip into a dark blue towelling wrap. I wear it every day. So I was keen to do the same to the pink wrap. I measured the zip in the other garment, the blue robe. I found that 32 inches was ideal. But, if that was too expensive or out of stock, 22 inches was adequate. I told the friend the colour and the lengths. At the s...

Posing for a photo with a passing dog post 609

Image
Picture 3 Angela Lansbury, in grey, swing style, Angelic dress, and passing dog. Photo by Trever Sharot. Using A Dog As A Fashion Photo Prop I saw this dog and thought, I just have to add that dog to a photo. It is an attention getter. You don't need to own a dog or pet to add interest to a photo. Just borrow the neighbour's. Or any passer-by with a dog will probably be flattered if asked to pose in a photo.  The difficulty is getting the dog to face the camera. We took half a dozen shots to get it facing me.  A dog's rear end is not a good look. We kep trying to get the dog to turn around, then get nearer to me. It finally got the idea and bounded towards me.  When we got the dog to face me and come nearer, I was alarmed and retreated. Dog gained, model lost. Anyway, we managed to get one picture before the dog, dog walker, photographer and I got tired. For details of the grey swing dress, the bag, the sandals, the jacket, and the black lace top, see previous post...

Dressing Up A Grey Dress, Post 608

Image
A rack of clothes at prices from 5 Singapore dollars ninety cents in the basement of Singapore's Bupit Panjang Plaza shopping mall atrium, near the MRT railway station, at the end of the line.  The bargain rack had four prices. The lowest was angelic at $5.90. That was the price in my mind. Picture 1. This is the grey swing dress I bought, at $5.90 - Singapore dollars. Photo by Trevor Sharot. The dress was rather loose. So I added a belt quickly improvised from a length of black ribbon. I have lots of reels of ribbon. The most useful is black, which goes with everything, especially with a black cape blazer jacket. To match the belt, I added a small black fabric rose on a hair clip.I just looked around my dressing table for something black. The silver sandals were an easy choice. I was wearing red sandals previously. Although red is my favourite colour, goes with red lipstick, and adds jollity, they just looked wrong. Silver looked right. I then hunted for a necklace to fill the gap...
